Default 2017 WRX/STI gripes and annoyances

Have had this car for close to a month. I think its time.

1. Keyless fob will not work on passenger door if the car is turned on.

Car is configured to open the driver side door only when opening from that side of the car.
If I turn on the car, get out, and try open the passenger door (with key in pocket), the door will not unlock.
If I try to unlock with the key fob by pushing the button, the door will not unlock.
If I try to lock all doors using the door handle, the car will emit a loud constant beep that will not stop until I go to the driver side and unlock all doors using the physical button on door.

It is very annoying that it does this. I have to manually unlock the doors via driver side buttons. Not to mention that the actual key fob doesnt work while the car is on. I configured the car to open all doors, and lowered the beep sound.

2. GPS Signal drifts

I have the HK system. GPS works fine, it takes me from point A to B (GMaps still better).
The problem is that the GPS receiver seems to not be that accurate, and it sometimes tends to drift. Sometimes it will put me on a street over, sometimes on a completely remote area with no streets. Compass seems to work good though. This problem would be fixed if the GPS would correct itself over time, but it doesn't seem to. This problem makes the Navigation completely useless.

I have found that having my cellphone in the A/C vent right above the HU tends to cause the GPS to drift. As soon as I put the phone there, I see a Searching for GPS signal on the HU. Sometimes it doesn't cause a drift, but most times, when I need it, it does.
Only way to fix a drift is to stop, turn off car, turn car on.

3. HD radio doesn't work for AM channels

There is only 1 station in AM I listen to, and it has an HD broadcast. This radio advertises HD for AM/FM, but it does not work for any AM stations. My BMW worked fine with this.

Partial solution is to find the FM station that multicasts this AM station. Problem is that, because it is in HD only, the signal will cut off constantly as it doesnt have a non HD signal to fall onto.

4. Trunk

I think everyone knows about this one. You need to really slam the trunk for it to close. Annoyance is that the trunk doesnt have an inside handle that I can grap to lower it. I am using the Subaru logo to push and close the trunk, as I dont touch the paint.

Anyone got a list of other things?

1) I have a key so I don't have any of the issues mentioned. Just press the unlock button on you fob twice before you turn the car on, easy fix.

2) Quite honestly I feel like any factory GPS is a waste of money as Google Maps is far more accurate. Battery life is the most common complaint, just plug your phone in.

3) I do notice that my car switches from HD to a standard signal quite frequently. I don't listen to AM radio so I can't say anything there.

4) You don't have to slam it but you definitely can't be gentle with it either. The issue is the weight of the deck lid more than anything else. I suppose you could mount a 5 pound wait somewhere on the inside of the deck lid if it bothers you so much.

I love my WRX but my complaints are the stock pedal calibration, stock tune, and the hill assist.

1) The pedal is overly sensitive while starting from a stand still so I constantly have to be conscious of this. Turing hill assist, and traction control off helps.

2) The stock tune tune puts most of the power between 2500-5000 RPM, it should really be tuned to be more linear from the factory, but it's an easy fix if Cobb every releases the damn firmware.

3) Hill assist works in practice but it produces drag on the car from 1st and 2nd gear so the car feels much better when you turn it off. The features negatives far outweigh any positives.

4) Trunk

I had the same issue as you (had to slam it more then I was comfortable with). What I did was adjust the latch in the trunk and now I can close it with very light pressure, it is way better.

Forgot the hill assist
Disabled that thing. It felt more like the rear brakes were stuck and would cause me to come close to stalling.

Ive been thinking about adjusting the latch location. Ill have to look into this.

You people with WRXs have the rev hang and power band out of whack problems too.
I find S mode a little to sensitive when coming of a stop, but fine elsewhere.
I mode is good for a relaxed drive.
S#, its like hitting hyperspeed. Everything happens so fast!

I don't mind the GPS at all. For things I've used it for, it takes me on the same routes my Kenwood unit with Garmin nav took me. Even for going to rural areas and to the cottage. I like looking at a big screen too and not having to mount a tiny (relatively) phone screen somewhere for google maps.

Hill-hold assit. No idea why that even exists. I disabled that thing right at the dealership when I picked it up.

My gripes:
  • thigh bolstering is non-existent
  • door armrest is small and doesn't reach forward enough (I'm short so its a short person's gripe haha)
  • no fold-down centre armrest for the rear like in previous years
  • voice-activated commands are s l o w (but at least touch commands are really quick)
  • HK unit has no graphic equalizer... The base unit has it, but not the HK I got the sound to where its pretty good and I like it a lot, but it could use a tad more tweaking with a graphic equalizer
  • preset stations for SiriusXM shows the channel number and not the channel name
  • no hidden holder for my sunglasses
  • C-lights are weak and are not DRL/high beam bulb is the DRL
  • no oil temp gauge... WRX has it (i think), but couldn't put it in the STI -- the supposedly track-focused car?
  • heated steering wheel... already have heated seats, defrosting side mirrors, windshield wiper defrosting, so why not heated steering wheel?

Final and most nit-picky gripe: When you get into the car, the centre screen in between the gauges shows a silhouette of the car, but its wingless! I want the wing dammit! haha

That's all I have. Annoying gripes, but not deal-breakers. Still love the car.

Love my car, but my nit-pick list:

- Factory STi Short Throw shifter is pretty terrible
- Hill Start assist
- Throttle mapping and Punchy factory tune
- No adjustable lumbar
- No good place to keep your guns
- Laggy refresh rate on back-up cam (though decent resolution)

I think that's it for now.

Gripe: GPS, when it gives directions, it completely mutes the music playing. I hate it.
Anyone know if there is a way to make it just lower volume for the music, rather than completely mute it? I haven't found anything.

I knew the GPS wouldn't be better than Google one, but I wanted the HK system, and having a built in GPS would allow me to just use that for long trips and not worry about my phone dying. I use the built in GPS to reroute myself constantly too.Traffic up ahead? Let me see what the map looks like.

Gripe: The HK is great, much better than the stock system, but I expected better. Maybe it will get better after the speakers are broken in properly (if you believe on that)

Bonus gripe:
People driving Camry's and SUVs that see my car, drive up my ass, and try to keep up when driving an on/off ramp. People pls
Must be the wing that triggers them.

No complaints with my base model in general. I could knit pick but what's the point, well the paint sucks ass. On the fence on getting some performance mods at the moment...

I'm in a bitching kinda mood so why not lol. And yeah the paint... I got full front paint protection film because of that.

one more nit-pick: no memory with the power seats. Right now its not a problem, but when winter comes around and I take it to the dealer for oil changes cuz I'd rather not freeze my a** off in the driveway, the techs will always change my seat position and I hate spending 5 minutes getting my position back. Yeah I know, firstworldproblems hah.

Specifically, what is your complaint of the factory short throw?

I cringe every time someone moves my seat out of place.
Its taken me all this time to finally find a sweet spot, and you just ruined it.

Gripe: A/C fan speed is way to high even on lowest. The 05 STI had like a million variances on fan speed. This one has like 6.
Also, does the auto A/C even work? I will be freezing before the fan even adjusts itself to the temperature set. It is always full fan. Ive never seen a Subaru system work properly on this.

random joy: Im less than 100 miles away from 1k. Ill be adjusting the rev beep from 4k to 5k and enjoying the car more
Ill do 6 or 7k rev beep once I reach 2k miles.

No problems with my keyless entry/fob. On the contrary, the wife and i love it. Super practical. It's worked perfectly in every situation.

Navigation is ok. Gogglemaps is better but goggle maps is better than every nav out there so... I'm fine.

HK is ok. Not the best, but not bad. I dont think I need any upgrade in that sense. I dont like that you can't overwrite preset stations.... but I dont listen to the radio anyways. Blue tooth is slow to connect though.

The trunk is super light. Most cars you can just drop it and it'll shut. This one you gotta help it a bit..... not an issue at all.

I hate 2 things:
Mid armrest is non-existent. Useless. They do sell a separate extension... WTF. That should have been stock.

No fix point roof rack mounts. Wow. I was amazed to find none.

Stock tune is punchy... once you get used to it, it's ok. But it's kinda annoying how noticeable the power dip after 4500rpm. I would trade a bit of the early punch for some more high end.

Hill assist and all that, I don't care about. You can disable it; so what's the issue?

I got full paint, undercoating and the film protection. Still sucks... the 3M is starting to look like crap. I gave up on the aesthetic of the car.

I do my own maintenance and work to avoid the "we need your car for 1/2 a day to do an oil change" bull****. But yeah... driving a manual I know what you mean by the seat position, nobody drives my car but me . I left it at the dealer one time for the recall and it took me a whole week to adjust the seat.

I expected more. The throw is still very long to me. The gear box is very sloppy. I installed a Perrin shift stop to take out the slop and it's improved the feel tremendously. I'm probably going to end up installing a secondary aftermarket short throw shifter to lessen the stroke even more. For what they charge for these things from the factory, I shouldn't have to throw more parts at it, so on a value scale, it's terrible. Hope that helps.

I feel the same about the auto AC! Its freezing! I close up the 2 driver's vents because of that. I have seen it go from full to 4, but it takes forever and I'm long frozen before that.

I'm at 10,000 kms (~6200 miles)... its definitely more fun after break in. I set the light/buzzer to 6200rpm.

Did you get 3M ventureshield, schotchgard, or scotchgard pro? I got the Pro -- sure hope it holds up over time, but my old subie looked like it had no clearcoat left at the front and looked sandblasted over the years without film so this time around i did it.

I do my own work/maintenance too, but man, when its -10 to -20C before windchill, I can't do anything. No room in the garage to do it either. Thankfully oil changes only take 45 mins max at the dealer. They use the oil I use too (Motul).

*shrug*

Whatever this is: http://theautoprotectors.com/service...tion-film.html

I got it thrown for free when I bought the car. Only on the front and side mirrors though.

I can't add a ton to this that hasn't already been said. I love this car. I was hesitant to give up my '14 hatch but I'm so so so so glad I did.

- GPS/HU: I put in an aftermarket unit the day after I drove it off the lot. It's a Subaru, you should just factor adding a legit HU into your purchase price.
- Rev Hang: This. I will try turning HA off when I get back into town.
- The no seatbelt chime: Will try the hack when I get back into town.

- I wish the FOB was switchblade. Stupid gripe I realize, and the Subispeed answer doesn't seem worth it.
- C-lights are kinda garbage in the base/premium trim. It was almost enough for me to go for the limited trim, I just hate leather seats.

Camber not fully adjustable from the factory.

I dunno, I find that if I don't like anything about a car, it is an excuse to mod it.

keyless works great, no doubt. It is very sensitive such that I think about opening the door and it unlocks

Apparently, the testers at Subaru didnt think the driver would get out of the car while the car was running. Thus the issue that I cant unlock the passenger door while the car is running, unless it is from the driver side door.

Is anyone else having this problem? I remembered that I disconnected the battery trying to fix the GPS issue, and I ended up having to reset the auto up/down switches.

The throttle response / 1st gear touchiness. I turned off the hill assist and it seems to be helping however it still feels like 1st gear is a digital choice of 0) Not enough revs and stall the engine or 1) clutch dump at 2k.

Granted I've only had the car for about a week and it's been 3 years since driving a manual but man is that window small. Coming from a 2003 Maxima SE it felt like I could abuse that car however I wanted. Ride clutch / 1st gear all the way up a hill; sure no problem. 2k+ clutch dumps, ok. I think I had 120k on before the car was killed (hit from behind by an inattentive driver at a dead stop).

Beyond that the radio sucks...But I don't think I've met a factory system I liked so can't blame Subi there.

Put a switch in line with the power seat. Turn it off when you leave the car with the dealer.

(indeed first world problem. I'm happy that the Crosstrek Limited has proper manual leather seats just like both my 90 M3 and 07 Lotus Elise had)
