Default 2015 WRX - Swapping Dual Climate Control

Hey All,

I'm researching how to install a dual zone climate control system into the 2015 WRX. There isn't much info I could find on NASIOC, except in this thread.
https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho....php?t=2811383

The good: the MFD detects it as dual zone once you swap the control.
The bad: you need parts besides just the control.
The unconfirmed: exactly what parts you need besides the control.

Here's all the parts I've found that differ from single climate to dual climate thus far:
  • Dual Zone Climate Control Unit - 72311VA020
  • Second Door Actuator Motor - 72131YC021
  • Door Actuator Motor Spring - 72121YC010
  • Door Actuator Lever - 72122YC070
  • Door Actuator Rod - 72125YC040
  • Door Actuator Clip - 72666FA030
  • (2) M4 Tap Screws - 904500026

After putting together this list I still cannot determine one thing; the air mix shutter inside the heater system. On the single climate system is this one door or two?
On this page there are three parts listed for the air mix shutter: http://parts.subaru.com/a/Subaru_201...10-720-04.html

Has anyone taken the heater system apart on these forums?

Does anyone know if the wiring for the second door actuator is already in the cars with single climate control?

Good luck. I stopped at the dual climate control unit. At least that works. You will most likely have to take the dash apart to get to the internals of the hvac. I thought it was just the motors. Ill have to take a look at my cousin's sti when I get the chance to see what moves.

I need to look under my dash and see if the wiring for the additional actuator exists.
If that is there, and the actuator mounts to the outside of the HVAC unit, I really think this could be doable with minimal work.

Anyone done this? I don't have a problem ordering all the parts, just need to know if the list above is everything. Should I get all three shutter doors?

Looking through the parts diagrams, it seems the 2016 wrx has all three shutter doors that the sti has. Is it just a matter of controlling these doors?

Well everything is on order, I have the wiring diagram, install location. I even have a set of '17 vents to update my '15 so we will see if it works. I will update when everything is in. From my own research, the parts that I ordered match those above btw.

yeah i did this awhile back.

Some people on facebook said it depends on what model/trim you got. The guy on facebook was pretty much full of **** and said it worked with his 2015 premium model.

Yes, thank you for posting that... You do realize I have the wiring diagrams with pin-outs to the motor which I will be adding to the car. I understand this is not a plug and play and I will be doing some tweaking. If all you have to say is that it won't work, keep that to yourself and let those who want to help, help.

If you get it figured out, do you mind posting a step-by-step with all the parts you needed?
Still interested in doing it, but haven't had time to devote to this.

I am in the process of doing this swap myself. I got a set of STI controls on eBay, as well as a 72131YC001 motor. Looking at the parts diagram, I now think that this is the wrong motor. Looks like it's the motor for the WRX. Also, do you not think we need the STI motor on the RH side? Part number 72131YC011. Not sure what the difference is between the C001 and C011?

Lastly, I have a '17 Limited. You said you have a '15. Is the wiring for the second motor not present on your car? Are you adding wiring into your harness? I think I need to return my motor and get the correct LH dual motor, the 72131YC021. This looks like a bit more of a headache than was explained to me, but it will be worth it. The GF is always cold.... when I'm sweating. Haha.

Also, for reference, parts.subaru.com shows the exact same parts diagram and list for '17 Base STI and '17 Limited WRX. So I am not sure whether or not the 72131YC011 and 72131YC001 interchange, as I mentioned in my previous post.

I found in the shop manual where the wiring diagram does not specify separate diagrams for single vs dual for the RH (*1 indicates single).
http://imgur.com/uqxTxJE
This leads me to believe that the motors should interchange for the right hand side. I have not verified this, but I do not think LH/RH would swap as the mounting should be different, but I also found installation/checking procedures for the motors and from those, they do look identical...

I am waiting on the motor and a few more parts to come in before I take apart my dash. I'm also going to install a head unit too so I wanted to knock all that out at the same time.

Okay keep me posted! I have the motor I indicated, but I don't want to open it if I need to return or exchange it.

Yes, I saw that, but it doesn't say what the difference is and they are listed for the same spot in the diagram.

Depending on the model (options), there is a difference:

[72143] 72131YC001: Motor - Actuator Mode [attaches to the left-side]
[72143B*A] 72131YC011: Motor - Actuator Mix [attaches to the right-side]

From what I found 72131YC011 is the right side and 72131YC021 is the left side (I have 72131YC021 planned to install).

Okay, but "do WRX's come equipped with 72131YC0011 or 72131YC0001?" is what I'm getting at. Both of these part numbers are shown in the RH position.

From my follow-up post above:

[72143] 72131YC001: Motor - Actuator Mode [attaches to the left-side]
[72143B*A] 72131YC011: Motor - Actuator Mix [attaches to the right-side]

They are different parts with different functions and do not occupy the same position.

So again. What part was installed on what model? You just posted exactly what you already did. This doesn't tell me what's in my car or if the parts interchange.

So again. What part was installed on what model? You just posted exactly what you already did. This doesn't tell me what's in my car or if the parts interchange.
My intent is not to get into an argument. My intent was to clarify that these two items do not occupy the same position on the heater/air-conditioning case when you state that they do occupy the same position.

None-the-less, my suggestion is to download the factory service manual and go through it to understand the differences between the models.
