2002 WRX

After previously having a 2011 WRX and then a 2002 WRX (with cage, seats, harness, etc) I decided I wanted to go back to the GR chassis and build something more street/daily friendly. I started looking and eventually found a 2010 STI SE Hatch in TX. I was originally looking at WRX's (planning to swap my 6 speed over), but it was the color and body style I wanted and at a good price.

The car was previously built and then taken back to stock with a motor from a totaled car with supposedly only 20k miles. It included a few items that I would have likely purchased anyways (COBB AP, fuel, clutch, etc). I flew down to TX and then drove the car back to MN. It was just over 1,000 miles and I made 3 stops along the way. It took around 16 hours to drive it back (including the stops).

Here are some more photos from along the trip.

Was this why the Bugeye went up for sale?

Looking forward to seeing progress here as well!

Thanks all. Yes a long drive, but worth it for a rust free car at the right price, and had some useful things already on the car.

Bugeye wasn't getting much use after the race car items were added so I decided to go back to what was most enjoyable - street car. And black GR was my preference. Still have the Bugeye and have only sold a few things. Need to decide what to keep and what to part out.

Since then I swapped the tail lights for stock ones. No photos yet. Hoping to get red overlays at some point. I also updated the feed and return line routing from the rail to FPR. I am working on getting some more parts together and then getting it tuned.

Before: -8AN Feed into FPR, FPR to Stock Rail Feed and to -6AN Return to Tank, Stock Rail Return Capped Off
After: -8AN Feed into Stock Rail Feed, Stock Rail Return to FPR, FPR to -6AN Return to Tank

Before:

After:

Installed some parts last night.

Aluminati Air Pump Deletes

ID1000 Injectors (Already Installed)

Invidia Catless 2 Bung Downpipe

COBB AP V3 (Already Installed)

GrimmSpeed Gaskets for DP Install

I was able to install some parts last night. Went to install injectors and found that the car already had ID1000 installed, so I left them. Should be plenty for now. Then I moved onto the air pump deletes and it was a much bigger pain than I remembered. Driver's side wasn't too bad, but I ended up leaving the passenger side and blocking it off on top. I will remove at a later date. Also had to cut the atmospheric sensor out of the driver's side solenoid.

After that I pulled off of the stock downpipe and put on the Invidia catless. Used GrimmSpeed gaskets instead of the included Invidia one. It all bolted up without issue. I also took photos of the COBB AP while I had other parts in the photo studio. Going to try and get a few more parts on and then hopefully get things sorted out to go to the track this weekend (last weekend anything around here is open). All pending weather and getting the car running well.

Did you have to tune the air pump delete?

Makes no difference to tune. Its just for cold start emissions.

Removing Airpump though will require disabling the CEL's

Quick question. Do you have any certain reason or reasons for choosing the GR platform to build your street/daily besides having the 2011 prior and liking it? Possibly better ride quality or something?

Will do!

Not likely. The difference between mid 9's and getting into 8's is a lot of money and a lot of broken parts. That's one of the main reasons I decided not to continue forward with the Bugeye project. It felt like that was the point of diminishing returns. Probably even high 9's would have been the most reasonable point to stop when considering cost and the ability to make multiple passes without something failing.

Correct. No specific tuning, but CEL's need to be disabled.

Basically came down to this:
  1. Nostalgia
  2. Wanted a hatchback
  3. Like the GR looks

I completely understand that, I'm considering ditching my '15 for another GR, I miss it.

Your parts photos are always so good. They're my favorite part of your build threads.
