Default Formula 1 2018

Last year's thread: https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho....php?t=2817506

While Vettel looked like the front-runner for a good chunk of the first half of the season, after the summer break has been the Lewis Hamilton Show and he cruised to his 4th World Driver's Championship, marking 4 straight years of Mercedes dominance in the V6 turbo hybrid era.

2018 driver's lineups:

Quote:
Mercedes (Mercedes) - Hamilton, Bottas
Ferrari (Ferrari) - Vettel, Raikkonen
Red Bull (Renault) - Ricciardo, Verstappen
Force India (Mercedes) - Perez, Ocon
Williams (Mercedes) - ???, Stroll
Renault (Renault) - Hulkenberg, Sainz
Toro Rosso (Honda) - Gasly, Hartley
Haas (Ferrari) - Grosjean, Magnussen
McLaren (Renault) - Alonso, Vandoorne
Sauber (Ferrari) - Ericsson, Leclerc
All eyes turn to Williams to decide the last competitive seat of 2018. Former F1 driver Robert Kubica is the front-runner for the seat after 3 separate tests each with Renault and Williams.

After only scoring 30 points all 2017, the 3rd straight abysmal season with a Honda power unit that never managed to get on par with its competitors, McLaren has finally quit bailing water out of their sinking McHondas and cut them loose in order to run Renault engines in 2018. This brings them back to where they started as a customer team that cannot win the championship, except with less power than they originally had with Mercedes.

Sauber will be running current year spec Ferrari engines rather than last year's as they had before and have created a joint partnership with Alfa Romeo.

2018 race calendar:

Quote:
March 25 Australian GP Melbourne
April 8 Bahrain GP* Sakhir
April 15 Chinese GP* Shanghai
April 29 Azerbaijan GP Baku
May 13 Spanish GP Barcelona
May 27 Monaco GP Monaco
June 10 Canadian GP Montreal
June 24 French GP Le Castellet
July 1 Austrian GP Spielberg
July 8 British GP Silverstone
July 22 German GP Hockenheim
July 29 Hungarian GP Budapest
August 26 Belgian GP Spa-Francorchamps
September 2 Italian GP Monza
September 16 Singapore GP Marina Bay
September 30 Russian GP Sochi
October 7 Japanese GP Suzuka
October 21 United States GP Austin
October 28 Mexican GP Mexico City
November 11 Brazilian GP Sao Paulo
November 25 Abu Dhabi GP Yas Marina
* subject to confirmation on date
Pre-season tests:

February 26-March 1 Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona
March 6-9 Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona

In-season tests:

May 15-May 16 Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona
July 31-August 1 Hungaroring, Budapest

The cars will lose the shark fins but gain the unsightly halos.

Oh, and there's a new logo as well.

2018 will be another snoozefest, Mercedes and Hamilton will win again, even easier than this year.

Each point in on the the grid is sensor to help map the air flow across the surface of the car.

The halos look weird, but after a season or three, I bet older cars will start to look like something's missing.

I wonder if drivers will complain about the pillar in the middle, it seems like that would be distracting on the straights.

Leclerc/Giovinazzi would be an electric young pairing, here's hoping.

Any bets on who finishes last next season? Sauber is still the frontrunner for the backmarker, but are going to have current spec Ferrari engines again, so they might be closer to Haas. Their driver pairing cannot be as strong as GRO/MAG, tho. Toro Rosso has been trash lately and are moving to Honda so they might sink. Personally, I'm hoping this is the year Honda's gains start to show in terms of power and reliability.

Haas will be last; I donīt think that crybaby Grosjean and Rambo Magnussen is a strong driver pairing.

And Iīm not impressed about the Kubica times, combined both days

He beat Stroll right?

Williams is all sorts of terrible.

So.. with Alfa Romeo as the title sponsor (yes I know Fiat spun out Ferrari), are we looking at the new junior Ferrari team?

Stroll did tire testing, and only 26 laps
Kubica dit the fastest laps with the new hypersoft (the softest of all tires)
Sirotkin did his time on soft tires (not supersoft, not ultrasoft, not hypersoft)

I still cannot understand this overrated Kubica hype

According to Paddy Lowe we aren't supposed to judge his speed compared to the times the other drivers put in. Only they know what programs the drivers were running.

Otherwise, yeah...

Still hoping he comes back as it will make next season more interesting. Anything can help...

I'm guessing Alfa at #9.

Oh wait.

Alonso keeps crowing on how McLaren has the best chassis and all they need is an engine. Well they got an engine for next year (Renault), so I expect the to be equal or better than Red Bull.
