17" RallyX options?
Hey, I'm stuck on a hypothetical (at the moment) problem;
*IF* I'm somehow lucky enough to get into a 2004 STi this summer, I'm wondering what would be good tires to run in our local RallyCrosses? (Open Class) I'm assuming (at the moment) that it will come w/ the big Brembos... so I don't think there are any bonafide rally tires available... Is there a decent 17-inch "off road" tire that would serve as a RallyX tire? Any ideas? Thanks for any help, Russ

17" rally tire would be ridiculous... IMHO...
Speedlines or Racelines should fit over any 4pot out there... even the Brembo kit... they come in 15" or 16" and are what most rally teams tend to use as race wheels... you can get speedlines here: www.avsport.net hope this helps. Not really any offroad tire. You could get all-season or snow tires, that'd be your best bet. For the couple minutes I thought about trading my car in to get an STi, my plan was to just sell the gold Brembos/rotors and put on the older subaru 4-pots.
Jamie, the Brembo ones on the new STi only fit over select 17" wheels even, they definitely don't fit over any 15 or 16" wheel I've ever seen. That's why the new-age STi RA comes in a 17" and 16" wheel version, the 16" one comes with steel wheels and the old Subaru 4-pots, which work with anything. Phil |

Perhaps something like a KDWS or SP-5000 might be your best bet in 17"

**Sti Discs and Calipers, BIAS Pedal Box and Hydraulic Hand Brake **Tires and Wheels: Compomotive TH2 Pirelli Rally Tires *COMPOMOTIVE TH2 A great wheel for competition and a nice looking addition for your daily driver. Rally:7 x 15 15" comp's fit the STi brakes..... be interesting to see if they fit the "new" sti brakes eh? i know there are options out there... there are simply too many Open class-big-brake-types out rallying 15" wheels for there not to be.... hope this helps. To answer your question, AVSport does sell Prelli X series rally tires for 17 inch wheels. They are probably very expensive though.

Jamie- I believe Phil/dwx is correct- only a few 15"s even fit the older STi 4-pots, and there's no way they're gonna work on the new giant Brembos... that's what sparked my question in the first place...
(hey, even though I'm a "noob", I still did a search) Same as Phil, I've thought of the nearly-insane possibility of ditching the Brembos for the "old" 4-pots... Seems kinda absurd though... Hmmm.. Russ |

Yes, 15" Racelines won't fit over the stock MY04 Type US STi brakes.
My advice is get some Blizzak WS-50's in a 17" size that will fit. (e.g. 225/45 17) They have a sufficiently open tread to be ok in mud. Glenn |

You are correct, PeterJ- I just peeked, and sure enough. I knew Pirelli had super-spendy 16 inchers, but I didn't know they had some 17"s too. That's awesome! Sure they'd be expensive- but that still makes more sense than ditching a nice set of Brembos, eh? Glenn- yeah, before PeterJ told me about the Pirelli$, I was trying to figure out which "winter tire" or "off road" tire might fit and would perform well in RallyX conditions... Thanks everyone for the advice- now I can just concentrate on stressing out about *when* I can get my grubby mitts on an STi!! Russ |
