Default 2019 WRX and STI gripes/complaints/rattles

Title states it all.

Head unit has a rattle inside it. It drives me nuts. I don't really want the dealer tearing the dash apart to fix one rattle and make ten more.

What bugs you on your 2019 WRX and STI?

I had a rattle in the driver door on my 19 WRX Limited. I took the panel apart and found that it was a hardness bracket that was a little loose. I fixed it. Car has zero rattles for now.

On my WRX CarPlay does not work properly on my HK stereo.. but not enough to drive me nuts.

HK system doesnt get loud enough (other models loke forester get a lot louder).

Keyless entry is slower than other models Ive used.. it often unlocks while the handle is being pulled so I have to pull again.

WRX exhaust stock is wayyyyy too quiet.

Have 2500 miles on stock tires and they are showing significant wear on edges.. been all over maintaining air pressure with temp dropping.

Volume on headunit is annoying.. it overlays the whole screen and hangs around way too long locking out other buttons.

Rev hang from first to second makes the 0 to 60 slow.

Auto headlights don't turn on soon enough.

Limited headroom for people 6 foot and taller with sunroof.

Feels like more body roll than an impreza since the platform is old.

You can adjust the auto headlight turn on time through the center console settings. I believe setting it to "max" makes it turn on sooner. That annoyed me at first too.

I'm 6'1" and I fit with the sunroof easily, in fact I have more headroom than on my tC. Still room behind me for another 6' person too.

Stock stereo is just terrible garbage, stock tires are way too loud, and the exhaust sound is very muted for a sporty car. I knew all those before buying the car but still it just seems like a lot of stuff I'll have to pay to 'fix' later. Also mine seems to have developed a rattle in the trunk, but it might be related to my tool box that's back there (it didn't make noise in my previous car, it's got padding). I wish the digital display in the instrument cluster could be used for more interesting things, but ultimately I'll just put a OBD II scanner somewhere so I can see what's going on with the car (and later an AP).

Still love the car though, do not regret my purchase one bit.

my only complaint is the range of the remote. It seems anything further than 15' away from the car, you can't unlock/lock the door. Sometimes I question myself to see if I locked it and if I'm at a reasonable distance, it won't flash the headlights. My other vehicles have excellent range.

Try putting the remote against your head, it will amplify the range a little.

jesus sounds like you should have test drove one prior to pulling the trigger with this list of complaints.

The steering wheel controls for the radio SUCKS on my '19 Limited. Wish it had a rocker for volume and a rocker for tune. Instead we get a odd block thing that you can't even tune from because just tapping right and left is presents and holding it is tune but it's super hard to just tune to the next channel without skipping a few channels.

Also so way to turn on all the cabin lights from the dash suck, old school American cars had it so if you clicked the dimmer all the way up the intieor lights would come on. This bothers me so much I'm gonna see if I can add a switch to do what I want.

Only other thing is the mode selector for the hvac being a infanite spin dial with the selection displayed on the secondary screen. The on the boost screen it doesn't have enough room to show what you are on.

Outside if these kinda nitpicking things I love the car.

agree with 1st to 2nd rev hang is piss! also find the clutch depresses way to deep in relationship to the pedals so i'm finding it a struggle to adjust my seating to be comfortable for shifting gears. thinking i need to adjust the reach and/or add a clutch stop.

also agree that the volume display hangs on the HU too long, and the right audio volume/track control block on the steering wheels blows and should have been a rocker setup like the cruise control on the right.

what really bothers me is the sunroof control. on my prev car, there was only one button that worked to close for both tilt and slide. instead they are independent and opposite sides so you have to fumble around and consciously think about it to determine what side you need to press to close the damn thing. what makes it worse is that there's no illumination up there, not even on the buttons, so you can't see where you are reaching to in the dark. and the area is so vague to the touch you can't feel your way around easily.

SupraSentientů trunk rattle might be the third brake light on the back deck as i found it sat loose on top and would rattle somewhat from the HK subwoofer bass. i saw a YT video which recommended stuffing a towel in the hole below it and it seems to have worked for me.

1) Is this serious? What is a slow reaction for a signal travelling at light speed? Do you want the lock mechanism spring loaded like a bear trap or something?

2) You should have gotten the STI, sounds a million times cooler

3) You should have gotten the STI, shreds corners like they are going out of style

I want to walk up and open the door with key in my pocket. I could on my wifes 2017 and now 2019 forester. Instead, I walk up pull the handle and it unlocks while I pull it which doesnt release the door until I pull again.

You think i couldnt make a longer list for any other car I tested? Im just being real with my complaints.. slow auto headlights doesnt mean I move onto another car. I knew half these issues before I bought it.. they weren't deal killers.

ohhhhhhh, ok I misunderstood.
I didn't realize the wrx had a keyfob I guess you mean where you just get near it and it opens?

Mine is a regular key with buttons on it and you push the button to unlock which happens within a fraction of a second after pushing the button.

from my understanding, you have to actually "touch" the back of the door handle before it actually unlocks. so you have to give it a second to unlock before you can pull on the handle.

so are you saying the doors unlock by proximity only on your 2017/2019 Forester? or is it just a quicker touch unlock response on them?

I think you described it right. It requires grabbing the handle to unlock - Its just slower on my WRX than the 2 foresters Ive owned with it. I have to grab the handle and hesitate before pulling. I dont need to hesitate on the forester. Im sure it is some configuration subaru did to improve battery life, I really dontthink I am imagining it.

I've heard this complaint from customers. I think it's more of "what you are used to" than anything. You would have to reach forward to roll the dimmer switch to do it(more work, I think, than....) or you reach up for the cabin lights. You'd go through all the trouble of making a new switch instead of just using the other hand?

It's random with me. I know of the delay and usually don't have an issue; but, it's done that to me on every model. I've just programmed myself to "not be in hurry" opening the doors. Your issue makes me wonder if they have changed something.

i've been caught a few times pulling the handle before it unlocks, so if it is indeed quicker response on your forester, that would have been great if on the wrx as well.

What bugs you on your 2019 WRX and STI?
2019 WRX Limited

I like the car a lot in general. There are some nits...which may be user error, but I think operation is still not intuitive.

1. Outside temp seems to always read 5-6 degrees high.
2. HK System boots up very slowly. I cannot plug the iPhone in until the HU boots up.
a. If I do plug in before car starts, there is no connectivity with HU, and you have to unplug and replug after boot up to get connection.
b. Sometimes there is some connectivity going on, but the iPhone touch screen becomes unresponsive, and the HU also shows CarPlay as grayed out and is unresponsive. You have to unplug and replug.
3. The HU and CarPlay are two separate systems, and you cannot just ask Siri to switch to the radio or SXM sources. You cannot control this from the steering wheel as far as I can tell.
4. The touchscreen interface is dangerous while driving. There should be a way to use steering wheel controls to scroll through choices, for example checking the directions step by step in Waze or answering whether a cop is at a reported location. Looking down to touch a precise place on the screen is dangerous, and on a less than perfect road surface induces touch error because your finger hits the wrong area on the screen when hitting a bump.
5. The touchscreen is subject to sunglare, and is visually useless in certain situations.
6. The auto dimming does not seem to work, being blindingly bright at night...you have to switch to manual to get it to dim.

1) the manual specifically describes a calibration procedure for the temperature sensor, just adjust it.

5) hell yes, it is downright invisible in direct sunlight

1) I'm reading the manual right now and it says nothing about calibration for outside temp. Just a note that it's the temp that's around the sensor.

Are you talking about the auto dimming of the center console? If yes, you must have dash brightness adjustment set to the max. When you do it, it over-rides the sensor. Turn the dash brightness down one and then the auto dimming function of the center console will work according to whatever you had set your light sensitivity to. And yes, this is in the manual but I think it can be easily missed, I know I did.

If you have the interior lights to max, google maps has an issue in going to night mode using CarPlay. Going to the step below fixes that.
