Got Hellas. Okay, so which horn wire is pos. and which is neg.?
I ended up getting the wife some Hella Supertone horns for Xmas, mostly because she's having such a hard time adapting to the crazy New England drivers, and she and I have the kind of relationship where she'd like that sort of gift. And she did.
Naturally, I got a set for m'self too. Duh. Got them from Griot's Garage.
Now, of course it came with instructions but, being myself (hhm that sounds funny), I figured I'd just wire the Hella to the OEM wiring, since it looked the same anyway. But when all was done, the noise was a low pitch, didn't sound as-expected.
Much ado later, I realize you need both. (I'd only installed the 300Hz horn, not the 500Hz one too). I figured you got two because some cars have two horns, but ours only has one so...
But, alas, non!
Put up a thread in Stereo, got lots of tips and suggestions to build a relay, but Griot's says it isn't necessary. They're mainly for cars older than 1975 (a battery power thing, I guess??). So today I braved the suckers, followed the directions as well as I could, built a horrid bracket out of the supplied pieces, and scared myself crapless a second time when reconnecting the ground to the battery.
Sounds a bit better, but still.....hmm..... I don't know. On the OEM horn, is the positive wire the one with the blue stripe? I figured as much, not finding any markings, and hooked it up that way as the directions dictate. It's a cool, loud tone, but it just sounds different from the loud Euro. "BEEEP!" I was expecting. Sounds more hoarse...
Maybe I crimped a wire too hard or something. It's possible. My mod talents are infamous. Tonight the car's at Exeter, awaiting morning examination for engine noises and brake shudder. Fun all around.
Oh... tomorrow I'll be hooking the Hellas into Christine's Cavalier, if we have time. I haven't had the opportunity yet!
