Question intake, headers, internal, etc

Own a MY98RS. Are any non turbocharge performance upgrades (bolt-on, etc) really worth it? Will they really enhance the performance of my car or just make a bunch of noice. So far I've only considered a muffler (stromung maybe). I have focused more on handling, not power. Also, the other day I went to a used car lot and found a MY99RS that had an intake on it. The sales man said they just spent $400 on fixing a sensor in the intake. He had no idea what it was for or why it had to be replaced. I soon realized it was the maf sensor that had been replaced, and this reinforces all the problems I've been reading about with air intakes and maf sensors. I feel bad for the poor guy who buys this car and ends up having to buy a stock air intake system because the maf sensor keeps failing on him. Who knows how many times its failed already. Iím sure the stock system isnít cheap. Anyways, are air intakes out of the question for certain models/year RSís?
Oh bye the way, in my opinion, I think the 2.5RS is gutless but it is a hell of a lot of fun to drive and once you get up to speed you will own the corners.

not talking about the 99, but 98's don't have to worry about intakes blowing the maf because it uses good ol'fashioned wire.

IMHO I think turbos offer the most bang for the buck....

Are non-turbo performance mods worth it? Thats purely subjective. I would say it really depends on how much you can afford.

If you can save enough for a turbo... then get one! 98's have a good rep for being able to handle a turbocharger with less problems.
The 98's hot wire maf is much more durable than the 99's hot film maf.

If you cant afford a turbo, I would suggest the following performance mods in this order:
cold air intake, lighter flywheel, and catback exhaust.

There are other great performance mods like better cams, heads, and bigger throttle body... but that it big money that will take away from your turbo fund.
