Angry Got oil changed... they put dino oil in after I've been on synth :(

I've been on synth for 7k miles now, and got my oil changed at my trusted mechanic - who's usually very good.

I forgot to remind him about synth though, and he called my cell as I was on my way home with the car and told me he put dino oil in.

I'm taking it back first thing tomorrow and he said he'd drain it out completely and put synth back in.

Am I going to hurt anything driving just a few miles on dino?

run a decent oil flush through as well.....I've heard some stories about jelly being formed when synth and Dino are mixed....better confirm this though, it could be just a rumour...

Not sure what kind of oil you're using, but this comes from the mobil 1 faq.

Myth:You can't mix Mobil 1 with conventional oil.

Reality: Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ is fully compatible with conventional motor oils, semi-synthetic motor oils and other synthetic motor oils should it be necessary to mix them. But the superior performance of Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ will be reduced by diluting it.

Stop worrying. There is absolutely no danger associated with switching between synthetic and dyno oil.

Exactly. I run "dino oil," as you call it, in my car everyday and will continue to as it does not matter. The only difference is you pay more for synthetic oil.

you're kidding about freaking about dino oil, right?

Lots of people (famous engine builders) recommend not going to synthetic until after as many as 10,000 miles.

Don't freak.
Change out the dino oil at 2,500 miles if you are worried about it.

however, do get your money back if you paid for synth.

Exactly. You might want to pay extra attention to running the car off boost before shutting it down as well for a little extra peace of mind. Modern dino oil is very good. IMO synthetic is better for turbo applications, but you are by no means going to hurt anything running dino in there for 3K or so.

Yeah, I didn't go to synthetic til about 9k. I'm at 16k miles now.

Thanks for setting my mind at rest guys - I'm still gonna go get the synth put back in though. That's what I paid for.

That being the case, run the dino oil for 3 to 4 days and use it to flush out the motor.

Dude, you live in Florida. No reason to worry about mixing syn and dino oil as others have told you.

No reason to throw the oil away, either. Keep it in for 3k miles and switch back to synthetic.

Think about the environment man! Dont waste the oil, just run your car with it until you need another change.

OMG YOUR WRX IS GOING TO BE SO MESSED UP FROM THE DINO OIL!

Seriously,

I'd ask if you could run your 3000 miles out on the mineral and get a credit for the synthetic next time you go back to get it changed. Nothing will happen from running mineral after running synthetic. Not sure who put those silly thoughts in your head, dude.

I would just get the money difference back for the snythetic oil. Your lucky your mechanic even told you he forgot. Your car and you wouldn't have even known the difference for 1 oil change.
