Default Custom exhaust..better or worse?

i was wondering, instead of paying so much for a turbo back exhaust, is it better or would it be wiser to buy your muffler of choice and have custom piping put in all the way back to the turbo?
is it actually cheaper?

Generally worse. Most exhaust shops cannot make mandrel bends, so the flow is going to be pinched at the curves, but these places will be very inexpensive. If you have a place that can make the mandrel bends, they still haven't done the flow testing to "perfect" it like the "mass produced" systems like TurboXS, Scoobysport, Hayward & Scott, Cobb, etc. Part of the high price that you are paying is the cost of research and expertise in making them. If you have somebody custom make you an exhaust to equal these companies, you are going to pay out the nose.

I disagree. Its very much dependent on the shop you are working with, but for the most part a custom build exhaust can be just as good if not better than most of the expensive systems out there. Especially when it comes to the mufflers themselves.

Since we are talking about exhausts. The TurboXS turbo back exhaust was dynoed for about 27 hp to the wheels. Would I be able to get that with a custom manderal bend 3" stainless steel turbo back exhaust with a nice quality muffler like Brullen, Blitz, Greedy, HKS....Thx in advance guys...any info would be great

I have a custom exhaust- I feel a little more torque and a bit more at the top end, but I can't vouch for 27 hp as I haven't dynoe'd the car.

i would go custom after the downpipe. the subaru flanges are hard to find and the hardest piece to make is probably going to be the downpipe. i'm definately going custom muffler/ custom modified midpipe. the axel-backs are so expensive, not really sure why. i'm thinking of buying some prefab mandrel bent 3" 304 sections and a universal muffler for my car. then i'm going to have my turboxs midpipe cut before the reducer and put a 3" resonator. flanges will go inbetween everything so i can swap back in the original taper and can use the stock muffler, or the additional resonator and custom muffler section. no idea how much it will cost, but i'm willing ot pay a good amount of money to do it.
