![]() The setup i always hear people raving about is the EJ22t block w/ EJ25 DOHC heads. I hear they flow well.
EJ22's make alot of torque which tears the tranny apart. As far as I know the only trasmission that is any better is the new STI tranny... but im not sure about that. |

![]() Most guys don't build the EJ22-T, but rather keep the stock internals since it low compression and what not. However, the internals are still cast, so the strength is not there. I am in a big debate with myself right now over whether or not to build the EJ22-T with forged internals or build an EJ25 with the same.

![]() yup yup, Tony Rigolli got big famous write ups doing the 2.4L strokes.
I also am one of the people looking for a ej22 'buildup' meaning custom measure rods and pistons... reliable enough to hand down to my kid twent-five years later... also, I have heard that the flow holes (oil or coolant not sure) does not bolt exactly with the ej22t block and the phaseI dohc ej25 head... anybody know? I do know somebody with an MY98 2.5 with a 2.2t shortblock running easy 10psi though... hmm... |

![]() HOK, do you by chance know the name of that company in Cali?
I'm going to have to start weighing my options, but new internals would be a definite for the EJ22-t, though I do NOT plan on stroking it. Graham |

![]() Axis Power Racing(they have a stroker kit too) and Z1 can get you internals for the Phase I EJ22T and the Pistons are the only part cast. We went through that debate a couple of months ago with pictures I took of the block I have.

![]() How much boost/power do you plan on making? The ej22t is quite a strong engine there is a guy i know around here making 450-500hp running 21+psi on one with the phase 1 dohc heads. That car would walk all over my car with 10psi, its terrifying.

![]() The turbo is some sort of massive garret hybrid with the 4inch inlet and everything. I think its something like a GT30. I do know that he was at the edge of what 660cc injectors can handle power wise. I hope he doesnt mind me talking about his car. Maybe he'll show up and chime in if he wants to talk anymore about it. I think that he would be a very good person to speak with about a heavily built 2.5 vs. a 2.2t. He has run both.

![]() That would be nice if that guy could share some input.
So the pistons are the only cast part of the EJ22, huh? That doesn't seem too bad. It would nice to know what the threshold of the stock rods are though. Graham |

![]() i could be wrong, but i believe "that guy" is mark a friend of mine. i have seen him push close to 30psi out of the stock EJ22t. his screen name is xypher i believe and he is very very knowledgeable. he has got my 98 to run 20psi out of a very similar setup for around 320 at the crank.

![]() Well, if you ever talk to him, could you tell him to check this post. I would very much so like to know what he has to say about the EJ25 vs. EJ22-T.
I might try PM'ing him. 30 psi on a stock block? Thats not bad...I wonder what kind of turbo it was. Graham |

![]() Yea i think I've heard of this guy... but he is running a Air to Water IC.... i think its way more efficient than anyone running the air to air... thats why he can get that much psi... still very impressive. I think i should call Z-1. Graham what are you thinking of doing... eheh... i like the sound of the budget EJ22t.. since i already have one.. hehe

![]() I'm really trying to decide between an EJ22-T build and an EJ25 build. If the rods in the EJ22-T ARE forged, then all I will do is drop in some forged pistons to the block and have beast!
Otherwise, I will have to spend upwards of 5K on a build EJ25, obviously a much more expensive option. What do you think HOK, with a new set of pistons in an EJ22-t? Other opinions welcome as well... Graham |

![]() I'm doing the EJ22T with EJ25 DOHC heads. If you go this way you will need to get an intake to go with the heads and it will have side fed injectors I believe. Mine's off a 97 and thats what it has. You will also need all the idlers, cam pulleys, crank pully with the right sender for your ECU (stand alone or factory),tensioner, covers for front of motor, and well you can go from there. Depends if you want a complete separate motor or not. The only things I can think of for now that I'll be using off the 2.2 NA in the car now is the throttle body and the sensors.I bought the block new from Belknap Subaru for $1300.00 plus shipping. 603-524-0419.Talk to Mike. For the pulleys, Idlers and tensioner $250.00, I talked to Steve at Fs Auto 203-597-9724 or your favorite Suby Junker. I got lucky and got alot of stuff with the heads. If I were to do this again I would buy a complete EJ25 DOHC motor if it was around a $1000.00 because I'm over that easy on heads and parts and still buying stuff, and you want a matched set of cam pulleys. That 20 Psi motor is a stock short block but it's got 12mm ARP head studs torqued down to 100lbs and o-ringed. I'll probably have PDM do this, figure 500.00 for that. Then theirs some fitment issues, not that far yet. Whew, long post hope it helped.

![]() Actually i've done quite some research on this issue. Since i already have the EJ22T (EJ22K, i think the correct term is), i really just want to build on what i have... I've looked at the EJ25 route and it keeps getting more expensive for some reason... 5k is the least i've heard when all is said and done. The EJ22T is one of the best middle options i can think of... all the WRX guys say i have way better torque... all the EJ25 -T guys say i have wicked top end... everything is just in the middle which i like... and its so affordable.. you play you pay, but with this case its how wisely you pay... i'm looking at just getting pistons but i just can't justify cracking open the block and spending 1000 + labor for such little progress... pistons, coating, rings, crank, seals, bearings, rods only cost about 2000 more, from what i've seen. I'd say boost as much as you can spend... i'm can't spend too much, no money, so i might just go with 25 psi... (on a GT 30) hehehe
Hok @ 18 psi on (GT28) |
