Default GC8 Tire sizing

I need a new set of tires for the summer and I have got it down to three choices mostly. Yoko ES100 in 225/45/16, Azenis in 215/45/16, or Pirelli Assimmetrico in 205/50/16. I will be doing some auto-x and will run a few track days as well. I have had the azenis before and was quite pleased with them but Id like to get something a little longer wearing. The Pirelli look nice but the treadwear rating is only 140. Would the ES100 in 225s make up for some of the traction with their wider size? Has anyone used 215/45 Azenis on a gc8? Im a little worried it may be too small and really mess up my speedo as well as look fairly stupid. Any other tires in this price range I should consider? Thanks for any help. - Brandon

I'm going to guess that millions of people (I could be wrong) have used 215/45/16 on a 1st gen. Impreza. So yes, anyone has in fact done that (including myself).

Yes, it looks stupid if you drive around on them all the time. And yes, it will lower your actual speed at all rpm and increase your fuel consumption.

You can get 205/55/16 Azenis for $100 less per set. And guess what? They're the stock size!

Good luck.

Fred - Thanks, that was very helpful. Although, I dont think millions of GC8s exist. 205/55/16 is the stock size?

Yes, 205/55-16 is stock size in the US for RS and WRX cars.

205/50-16 was stock overseas. And prior to I think the mid-'90s at some point, it was the 16" size over here, too.

215/45-17 is a proper +1 from stock 55-series. I think it still is the "right" +1 from a 50-series, too.

205/50-16 actually gets more accurate speedo. readings, according to North Ursalia, who once talked a cop into clocking him. I've always surmised the reasoning to be that perhaps SoA didn't recalibrate the speedo. after the move to 55-series tires. (Which probably happened during the "Paul Hogan" Outback era, when Subaru was trying to soften up; the 55-series is a cushier ride. That's the only explanation I can come up with!!)

I'll be switching to 205/50 in a couple of weeks. I currently have 55-series Dunlop SP9000 tires on my OE wheels. They'll be switched to winter duty, so I'll have 205/50-16 Nokians for winter and probably Legacy B4 17"s next year, if I save up the $900. ---> www.subaruwrxparts.com

Good luck.

If the tires are a smaller diameter, and it takes less energy to get them rolling, wouldn't that save gas? Smaller diameter means better acceleration, but less top speed. And your speedo will be off.
