Default Pretty sure

I know the MY97 2.2 is plug and play with all DOHC 2.5 which can be found in cars up to MY99. I believe the MY96 is the same as the MY97 and therefore this same rule should apply. Any SOHC 2.5 will be a much more difficult project. I have a turbo 2.2 right now and I miss the torque of my old 2.5 Turbo in my RS so I'm going to do a 2.5 upgrade. I will probably go for a MY99 out of a legacy or outback so I can get a Phase II engine block.

Joshua, I am thinking about going to an EJ22-T in my RS. Is the torque falloff that bad with the 2.2L? I like the torque of the EJ25 but I am convinced it is not a good motor to build up for boost, and the EJ22-T is.

Is it really that noticeable?

Default My experiance

Graham,
I find the torque differance is really noticable and for me takes out alot of the enjoyment I had with my RS-T. I'm running a 2.2 NA block with stock compression ratio at 8lbs of boost. My 2.5 was only running 5lbs and was faster and a lot more fun to drive. My setup is a modified JC Sports GB kit. One of my things is I really like power on oversteer in my driving but the 2.2 just can't pull it off. Also there is the fact that to obtain the same HP levels on the 2.2 I have to run that much more boost since I already start ~30hp and torque less.

Yup, not just less displacement but lower C/R on the EJ22 is killing ya! Now, go out and get an EJ22T bottom end and turn up the boost!

How's the car running, Josh?

Default Car

Trent,
The car is running great thanks, no check engine lights or any problems just to slow. Actually the compression ratio is the same on my 2.2 as the 2.5 I had both are 9.7. I think for my more modest hp goals the 2.5 will make me happiest with best reliablity. Plus it's just fun to rebuild and engine.

Really? I thought the EJ25s were 10:1 or 10.5:1? Ah, well, not the first time I've been wrong.

Glad it's running well! So, you gonna bore out and rebuild your EJ22 block or get an EJ25 and rebuild that?

Default Engine

The DOHC 2.5 are 9.7 the MY99 SOHC is 9.7 all MY00 on are 10.
I will going with a complete engine swap because the 2.2 NA has nothing good, the Heads are SOHC and single port exhaust so they don't flow well at all. My plan is to go DOHC 2.5 out of an MY99 legacy or Outback so I get the Phase II block, if I get Phase I for the right price that's good too. I then will Oring the block and use a slightly thicker gasket to drop the compression a hair I still need to look into gaskets and compression.

Putting a WRX engine in any Impreza is no issue. Its the Wiring that is the kicker. All ECU related wires need to be spliced into the existing car harness.

Physically, everything bolts right up without modification.....you just need the proper crossmember. For more into....do a search, it has been documented and discussed in depth.

FYI, I have the WRX motor in my Y2K RS, and currently putting the 2.5L from the RS into my 93L wagon. (Engine compartment of all 93-01 Impreza's is the same) As for wiring I am using a complete Harness from a 01 RS sedan, and converting the whole interior to a 00 OBS sport. Heck the whole car is being converted to RS parts. (Engine, Tranny, Rear LSD, Suspension, basically everything mechanical will be from an RS in a wagon body). I guess i could start calling it a 2.5RSW.

Cheers

Jiffy, mikey here.......i met u at a beaver springs auto x and at stpr briefly.......i could provide some major insite to this, as i did the swap in my fwd 95 l, then pulled the motor, sold it to a buddy, and we put it in his awd 97 L......next time we meet up, at a auto x or what not, i could help out with alot, one of the main problems i had, was, i had no idle air control, so as soon as u cranked it, you had to hit the throttle, i only had mine rigged for a week or so, but it was so fun

Default What if. . . You have an automatic?

Is this still pretty easy? Can you use the tranny from the 2.2lx. Is the 2.5 Turbo or NA. Mine is the 2.2 SOHC. Its a 95. I'm sorry for my ignorance, but I'm new to subarus, or piston engines for that matter. Ive always had rotary cars until this year and I've never had an automatic.

Default up

My swap is complete and the car runs no check engine lights and no wiring what so ever. While the engine was out I updated the headgasket and O-ringed the heads for my turbo. I have yet to really drive the car since I need to get the valves adjusted.
