Torque split
As far as butt-G meter readings go, going into a hard turn with 50/50 torque split results in more smiles per radian traversed than going into the same corner with a 90/10 split that shifts to 50/50 when you start to oversteer.
Based upon these results I think development of "dial-a-torque" control for the 4EAT is a worthwhile pursuit.

Did you run a switch to make it run 50/50? I always kind of wondered about doing that. When I had my SVX, I would notice the torque-split shifting in certain situations.
For example, a left hand turn from an intersection, from a stop with dry pavement. Due to traffic, I mashed it pretty good. Got midway through the corner, and felt the front end break traction. About the time I started to react, BAM, it shifts the torque-split and the back end tries to swing out on me. Easy enough to catch, with quick, minor adjustments. But definitely a different sensation than any FWD or RWD car I've had. In the snow, it was much more pronounced. I remember some discussion on Yahoo about it, so it wasn't just my car doing it. You could mash the gas in the snow, and about 1 second into it, there was almost a perceptable 'BANG" when the torque shifted. A strangely harsh transition. I'm enjoying my Legacy GT with the M/T, since it's 50/50 all the time. The power slides are a very stable, predictable manuever (all 3 times I've done it anyway!). I don't really beat on the car like a lot of these guys do. I'm getting older and I'm a lot less invincible than I used to be. Rich |

No switch yet. Shifting into 1st/2nd forces the split to 50/50.
Perhaps it feels better because the oversteer is there from the start of the turn, instead of coming on mid-way through the turn. BTW, my testing was done from rolling starts, low speed but accelerating into a twisty on-ramp. |

Are you running a 50/50 split now, and how? This is a cool idea- would love to know the details! I ran into the understeer/oversteer situation once, on a sharp right hand corner, power on, foot to the floor, and felt a 'slip' and then the back end came around really quick, faster than I was expecting. Handled it fine, but was a little surprised. Haven't had any problems in the rain though, maybe the car is biased more to 50/50 when its wet out.

Hmmm. Talk about serendipity... I was thinking about asking here if the SVX shares the same AT as the RS, the 4EAT, and I think I already have my answer.
I'll let you in on a little secret. Rally Knight is already testing a manual shift conversion for the 4EAT. They have also reversed the torque split on the center diff from 90/10 to 10/90 F/R, with a dial-a-torque to allow you to dial it anywhere from 10/90 to 50/50. Currently, they should be testing the new AT kit in one of their rally cars at the Laughlin rally. I have yet to actually see or try out the shift kit, but so far, Rally Knight hasn't made any bogus claims that I've seen. I'll keep you posted as things develop. |

The rear sway bar of the SVX is... lilliputian.
Just as the RS responds nicely to an 18mm sway bar, I think the handling of the SVX could be improved in a similar manner. Any volunteers? |

I'll ask later today when I go up to the shop. Hopefully they'll have the manual trans and auto trans rally cars there so I can go for a ride!

Hey guys! After reading all the post on the YAHOO! SVX CLUB, I finally joined this one! I'm pretty impressed with all the technical info about the Imprezas on here. Quite a bit of it can also be used on our SVX's. Now if only we had the product support that Imprezas have!! (you guys don't know how lucky you are!!)
Anyway, about the torque split. It's IMPOSSIBLE to get past 50/50 on out 4EAT's WITHOUT removing the transmission and installing it in backwards!! The front wheels get power from a shaft that is linked to a gear at the rear of the tranny. During normal driving, all the power is sent, via that shaft, to the front differential and then to wheels. The transfer clutches are slightly engaged (90/10 F/R), in order to get rid of any drag from the rear drive shafts/differentials. If you drive with the FWD fuse in (100/0 F/R split, unlocked transfer clutch), you'll be dragging all that stuff in the back, and wearing out the rear tires because it alters rear wheel alignment. The transfer clutches can't lock more than 1 to 1.. It's physically impossible computer or not. The only reason it would be at 50/50 is if one of the front wheels totally looses traction(open front differential). Then when the tranny goes to 50/50, ALL the power WILL be transferred to the rear anyway, because none will be used in the front. So it's really 0/100 when the transfer clutches are locked at 50/50 (1/1). It's complicated but think it through. It's a complex system that uses a lot of logic. I don't know what these guys think they are going to do to get more than "50%" to the rear. That's just a number anyway, because I just showed that we can get 100% power/torque to the rear wheels when necessary. I did hear that there were a few Japanese prototype (?) 4EAT's that did have the shaft going to the rear wheels, making it a rear biased AWD, but I heard that it was REALLY HEAVY. So any handling gain gets canceled by the increased weight. Hope this cleared things up. If not, let me know, and I'll try to explain it a little better and give some links to more info. Oh and about MANUALLY SHIFTING your 4EAT, Level 10 Performance Transmissions (the best auto tranny racing experts) already has a PUSH BUTTON shifter for our cars. Thanks for the info. Now for the difficult question:
Do you know why the good folks on the Yahoo club REFUSE to abandon it for the superior in every way SVX forum here on the I-club? I mean, you can search posts, there is threading, you can post images, edit posts, etc. etc. ???? AND NO MESSAGE 40 BUG!!! [This message has been edited by CRZ_MSL (edited December 18, 2000).] |
