Unhappy Clicking or Rattling behind dash/instruments

Does anyone else have a rattle or clicking noise around 4000 rpm in the dash area? I have read the posts on the fix for the clips under the defrost strip but I did not want to take that apart without confirmation for this on the '04 STi. It is very slight and noticable most at about 4000 rpm. It is not coming from the engine compartment. I opened the hood and revved it up and did not hear it there. It is in synch with the revs though so I am thinking vibration, not wind.

I sometimes hear a rattling from up front, similar to what you described. It sounds like it is behind the dash and impossible to get to. I also have a bad rattle coming from the headliner in the rear. I just open the windows for now.

I have not had any problems with sound or rattling, maybe I should drive with windows up and radio off, If I hear anything I will let ya know. Might just be something lose. Good Luck

Try the ashtray. I couldn't figure out where this rattling was coming from while I drove. I finally traced it to the ashtray. Take it out and put it back in securely. Sometimes the metal bracket inside that holds it in rattles a bit. It's real annoying and hard to pinpoint because it comes from inside the middle of the dash.

I have the rattle coming from behind the instrument panel. If I press on the front of it the rattle stops. I am going to try dynamat behind some of the plastic trim to see if it helps.

The rattle you are referring to in the front of the dash is common on both the WRX and STi. It is caused by the white clips Subaru uses to hold the front most section of the dash. This has been referred to as "VIN Plate rattle". Do a search under that and you can see the fix. Basically you just need to hold the white clips in place, they are what is actually making the noise in most cases. FYI, be careful when pulling that piece up in the STi, the sunlight sensor for the Climate control is attached to it and you could damage it.

Happy Hunting...

I have some rattles too, when I do the stereo install I hope I discover where they are coming from.

1) Around the driver's side round air vent area
2) Around the passenger's side round air vent area
3) Around the center console area

It's hard to pinpoint where they are coming from. I looked under the dash and found some loose wire connectors, but I didn't turn out to be that. I can only hear them when all the window are up, and only when the road surface causes a certain vibration. But I wish I could just see right through the dash and fix them!
