2000 Impreza RS coup

Default Should i change tranny fluid if everything shifts fine?

I got my RS with 48K and now it sits at 54K. I am not sure if the transmission fluid has ever been changed or not. It's quite possible that it hasn't.

I seem to be shifting with no problem so i am hesitant to change tranny oil over to synthetic or if i even need to change it at all if everything seems to be fine. I have read stories where changing over tho synthetic in the gear box has created problems rahter than prevented them.
At the least i suppose i should stick some new dyno gear oil in there.

any thoughts?

I would change it. Even though it may shift fine and probably will shift fine for a long while, it's always a good idea to change all fluids at recommended interval. If you're not sure when it was done, replace it.

I'm at that stage also. Bought my car used and am at about 55k miles. I plan to change all the fluids soon.

Should I use Synthetic tranny oil or go stick with reg oil? Any threads or pages for or against Synthetic?

I did this with every automatic I ever had. Synthetic is pretty much up to you. GM uses synthetic in most of their modern day models. I, more then likely, would switch to synthetix. But, my purpose here is to suggest an external tranny cooler in combination with the cooler in the radiator. I don't know how subaru feels about having a tranny cooler and is quite likely that they will use the presence of a tranny cooler to deny any warranty coverage.

I put them on my cars because I know I'm quite hard on my cars; either intentionally or not. Sometimes I sit in traffic for long periods with the engine at idle with the AC on full blast. If had gotten an automatic in my wrx then I would have put on a tranny cooler and routed the fluid to pass the cooler before going into the radiator. If the cooler makes it too cold then the radiator will bring it up to proper temp.

Just my POV.
