Default Different side airbags in 03 vs. 04?

Okay, so I checked out a few automotive sites (carsdirect, IIHS), and it looks like the side airbag system in the 2004 WRX is different from that in 2002-03. The 2002-03 is listed as having "dual side impact airbags" -- the regular kind, which only protect the torso. The 2004 apparently has "dual side impact airbags with head protection" -- a bigger airbag, which expands upwards to protect both torso and head. Does anyone have any more information about this? (hopefully not from personal experience, but that could be helpful as well.) Do you think that it's the reason for the new seats in the 2004 WRX?

That's funny... I was just discussing this with my wife yesterday. If you find out any other info let me know.

I think the seat change was twofold....first, they probably wanted to slim down production costs by having the WRX and the STI to share the same seat design, making production easier and cheaper. I think the other reason was that there were a lot of complaints that the old WRX/RS seats were too restrictive for...um...larger people. I'm 6'2 and about 155 lbs, so they fit me like a glove. I slide around in the new style seats The airbag change may be because they're using the same airbag units as in the Forester, once again to save money on production costs. I'll check with my parts dept. tomorrow to make sure. Either way, it's a better airbag in the 04 as far as protection is concerned

I would be interested to know also, either way the '02-'03 and '04 WRX's have outstanding safety ratings. I always feel safe in my car.
