Question Talented body shops around SJ/Santa Clara area? Labor rates? Need some advice...

Just like the title says, I'm trying to figure out the names of a few good body shops in the South Bay and try to find out their labor rates. I'm up in Washington state right now for the summer but I go to school down in Santa Clara and I got hit by a huge deer Thursday night... I'm getting a fiberglass hood to replace mine but I don't think it's going to make it here in time before I have to drive down to Cali for school so I'll probably have to have it done down there... basically, I'm trying to figure out the difference in cost from the quotes I've gotten up here for the repairs and the quotes I would get down in the Bay Area so my insurance company can cut me the appropriately-sized check. I'm basically assuming that all parts will cost the same, and the only difference in cost will be the labor rate which is a low $42 per hour here...

Any help you can give me about who I should call or $rates$ that you've seen at body shops in the area would be really helpful and appreciated! Thanks!

And hey, check out www.EJ20Legacy.tk to see pictures of the deer damage and read how it happened... crappy stuff. Wildlife sux.

Hey thanks man! I appreciate that. I originally got those driving lights almost entirely for 'deer avoidance' because the stock headlights just sucked so horribly... guess they didn't help me this time. There are plenty of people that are just wildly against those lights, but almost everyone I've run into really likes 'em, including me :-). It's literally daylight for 1/3 mile when they're on... Hella says they'll put light on something up to 2500 feet away, which is almost half a mile. Good times.

So... body shops?

The RA tranny is sweet. No double clutching necessary, it's fully synchro'd like any other Subaru tranny. In fact, it goes into first much easier than any other Subaru I've driving without double clutching. I've always double clutched my downshifts though since about two years ago... but I've made a few regular downshifts in lazy moments with this tranny and it seems to be smoother than the stock 2.5 one I had or the couple of WRX ones that I've driven.

If you want a different tranny, I would recommend getting a tranny off of a 2.5 L and the appropriate rear diff if it's different from the WRX one (I forget). They're exactly as strong as a WRX but the gear ratios are MUCH better for the powerband of the WRX engine. Stock WRX gears are way, way too long. An RS tranny (or Forester, Legacy... whatever they're they same) has ratios that will drop you right into the power band on every shift when you run close to redline as opposed to too low w/ a WRX tranny. The RA tranny has SUPER short gears which is cool now and will be much cooler with a bigger turbo. The stock turbo kinda starts to run out of breath above 5500 rpm, and if I run to redline, the next gear will put me at 5500... which is crazy crazy stuff. 70 mph in 5th gear is 3600 rpm... RA tranny is 30% stronger than a WRX or RS tranny... it also has DCCD if I decided to buy the computer for it and a 35/65 front/rear torque split instead of the 50/50 that's on every other Subaru (except new STI). Hope that helps a little, e-mail me at [email protected] if you want any other details or whatever...
