Question need help picking out a Subie

This summer I am planing to get a inexpensive AWD Impreza as the start of a project car. and I was looking for a little recommendation on a model and year to look for.

I plan on using the car for hillclimbs and other such things and maybe even rally if I can come up with the $$$ later. I will be gutting the int. and putting in a cage, suspension mods, and cheap power mods. I don't want to spend the extra $$$ on the RS or heavy eng. mods on a non RS cause I would like to save the cash for a big fat crate of parts from overseas after I do the susp. and get to know the car.

I know a lot of you are gona say "get an RS" but I don't mind giving up the power now if it will save me money for my long term goal.

The only requirements I have is that it be an Impreza, AWD (of course!) and 2.2L (unless anyone can give a good reason for less), and it must have the most compatibilaty with as many other years and models of Impreza as possible. (this helps with parts support for a car that will be raced heavily)

sporty looks aren't a big deal because a friend of mine will be making fiberglass molds of different parts of his MY00 RS so light weight, good looking parts will be available to me. (even if I have to mod. them a little to fit an older car) But I am kinda favoring a 2 dr.

Weight will be important (especially until I get some BOOST in the car ) so if their is a particular year of impreza body that is lighter than the others that would be a factor in my selection of a chassis.

I'm no stranger to race type mods and build up but I am kinda new to Subies, so any help I could get from the more Subie experienced would be helpful.

thanks, Caine

I'm no expert, but since you want some kind of answer!

Look in the classifieds for a low-end 2.2 (brighton?). They're very popular up here, and I've seen a lot of high-mileage ones especially. I don't think any year in particular will stand out. Sounds like a fun project!

No one is probably checking this post. With the recent jazz with the WRX and all kinds of people posting 'talk me into this, talk me into that' stuff, I bet people see the title and think you are just another new person that wants an opinion on what color their WRX should be.

That was my first impression. I would switch the title to something like 'need lightweight , non RS motor impreza for build up - suggestions?'

As to the content of your post, I only know that the 2.2 brighton is supposed to be extrememly light. I don't know what year they were made though. Good luck with the search I bet people will jump all over this post if you re-title it!

Let's see... I'd suggest at least a '97 since they redid the interior, did a little on the front end, and made lots of little improvements to the unibody that year to strengthen it. Skip the 1.8L, as it is really underpowered. I should know. Basically, there is verrrrry little difference between years as far as parts compatibility goes. As far as I know, there really aren't any problems in that area at all.
