Default Would you have preferred a 2-door Baja?

I can't help thinking that the Baja would have been better with only 2 doors and seats and a longer bed--more like the BRAT and modern small pickups. That would make it much more useful IMHO. As it is it just seems like an Outback with part of the roof cut off.

If it didn't have the rear seats, I wouldn't have bought it. I wish it was a little bit taller and able to easily put some bigger meat on the wheels though. I get jealous when I look at some jeeps and 4x4s around here, but we'll see what the future brings.

Though the bed isn't the longest, it can hold quite a bit. With the tonneau cover on I could fit all the camping gear for 3 people and haul them to the campsite. With the cover off I was able to haul a diningroom table, 6 chairs, an end table and two passengers. It's bigger than it looks. And I haven't even tried putting anything on the roof yet!

I would'nt have bought my Baja, if it had only 2doors.

Orignally i was on the market for a pickup with a full backseat. Like a Nissan Frontier, or Explorer SportTrac. Decided to go with a smaller vehicle because i do a lot of downtown driving. And im a Subaru loyalist.

Besides, with the bed exteneder, i have'nt encountered anythign that "I" needed to move that has'nt fit =) And i have used the bed quite a bit.

I, too, would not have bought the Baja if it only had 2 doors. I owned an '83 Brat and loved it, but now I need the extra seats. I also wanted an enclosed place where I could carry Daisy, our yellow lab.

From my perspective, oyu've got to buy it knowing that it is not a full size, or even as large as a small pick-up. I bought it with that in mind.

We started looking at the Baja to counterballance my wife's New Beetle. So yeah, the four doors were an important feature. About the only difference I would like to have seen would to see a full mid-gate instead of the switchback door, like the original prototype had. I feel a bit limited by having only 12"x30" to pass items through.

I haven't found anything I couldn't carry yet though, but we're picking up a custom counter tonight, so we'll see what happens.

How many doors did not matter , I loved the exterior look,I would have found a way to make the 2 doors work. However I did find that the rear seat doors and the folding rear seat for more cargo/pet space has been very convinient.

I had a '78 2 door Baja (spelled slightly differently though).

I got rid of it when I needed more than 2 seats. Now I definitely wouldn't be interested in the two door, but I would prefer it if the bed wasn't all cantilevered behind the rear axle. Obviously that means a shorter body or longer wheelbase.

It would have been interesting if Subaru had used the Forester or Impreza body with the Legacy wheelbase and vehicle length. That should have reduced the rear overhang while possibly allowing a bit longer bed.

Just thinking...

I have to admit....of all the cars in my past my favorite was my 1975 ElCamino.

My car as of late is a 1991 Miata...modified.

But now I must have a bit more utility.....(human that is).

I really like my new Baja and have used the bed for many things that will NOT fit in my Miata.

My ElCamino was VERY FAST and useful for hauling the odds and ends that I needed to haul......

...but now I have split that car in two and have the utility with my Baja and the SPEED with my Flyin Miata equiped Miata.

That ElCamino couldn't take a turn very well and now BOTH my cars can.

The idea of making the wheelbase longer is a good idea. I'm constantly reminded of this picture from C&D, though maybe it's a foolproof indicator that you're carrying too much weight:
