Question Why doesn't SOA make Factory Racks for Sedans and Coupes?

Hello Everyone,

We should lobby SOA to equip Sedans and Coupes with the factory racks like those on the OBS and Outback. Call 1-800-subaru3 and tell customer service that you want a Factory Rack too. Who knows, we got a WRX didn't we.

Be careful what you ask for... people wanted a rack for the Miata and they got that trunk rack thing. (It's aftermarket, I know, but still)

"You can put a wagon rack on a coupe..not sure about the sedan. "

How did you install the roof rails? I know the clips are under the weatherstripping but asumed the mounting points on the rails would be off as the rails obviously need to be cut down.

Could you post instructions, parts needed or special tools needed. I know I would be interested in doing this too.

I contacted SOA about this months ago and they assured me it couldn't be done, but I figure there must be a way to McGuyer something. Thanks for figuring it out.

Subaru dealers do sell a rack for the Imprezas... most are also Yakima authorized dealers. Granted, I didn't get my Yakima rack from the dealer (it came from REI) but you can get them there.

I think we're talking about two differnet things here.

Yes, you can mount any aftermarket Yak, Saris, or Thule sysyems to these cars. Many have done so.

What we're talking about are the factory roof rail system that comes on the OBS.

This makes for a cleaner permanent install and allows the use of a sliding foot system. e.g. Saris' Talon system or Yak's Railrider system.

They provide more adjustibility and more bar spread options.

I have Subaru racks with 2 two bike carriers and a ski rack attachment... Not on at the same time of course.

I have the ski rack attachment on right now. I don't know who makes then but my key for the ski rack has "sport rack" on it.

I will try to post pictures and the prices.

Thumbs down

Please god dont let that be an option!
Factory racks are always overpriced, and and not as good as aftermarket racks.
They are used to dealers to inflate the price of a new car as a yet another dealer orders option that you dont want to buy with the car. And finally, it would ruin the looks of the car. Seriously though, cars that come with a roof rack option... have you noticed how hard is it get the car without said 'option'

Sorry, i will not be making that call to SOA. I'm not a fan of the permanent rack on the wagons & always wished there was a factory delete option for it. To put those rails on a coupe/sedan wouldn't look right; trust me, you do not want those rails semi-permanently affixed to your beautiful coupe or sedan. In general, i don't like leaving stuff on my roof. Something about driving on the freeway with your stuff hanging off the top out in the open just doesn't seem right to me.

Did you have to shorten the length of the bars? Do you have any pictures?

It would be the exact same set up. They would just have to adjust the length to suit the dimensions of the sedan or coupe roof. It should work great. Plus it would be optional, so if you don't want it, don't order it.

Right now I use a Yakima rack system which connects to the aluminum trim next to the windows. It isn't exactly a confidence inspiring set up, and can easily damage the trim.

Matt-- Agreed, Yakima makes the "attachments" (ski carrier, bike mount, etc...).

THese "attachments" bolt onto crossbars. possbly made by Yakima as well. Yes they are weak, crappy, overpriced, crossbars.

THe cross bars at this point either mount to a "foot system" that attach to the top of the window frames with clips. Which is what you guys are talking about.

OR: the cross bars slide on tracks (rails) that are bolted to the roof(top) of the car that are mounted at the factory or dealer. Leaving out the need for "feet(towers)" or clips. Like on the OBS.This is what we're talking about (the tracks or rails).

If anyone can show me a pic of a sedan or coupe with factory rails installed I'd love to see it.

KevinSubaru-- I'd still like to see your setup that you did on a coupe using the factory rail system. I went to your web page but all I saw was a sedan with a full aftermarket setup.

Thanks all,
