Post Car Advice.

My girlfriend is ready for a new car. Currently, she drives a 1988 CRX with about 9 billion miles on it. It's still going strong, but I know it can't last forever. Plus, I don't like it when she drives around with our daughter. A carseat in the front seat is not a good idea. Plus, on the Metro-Detroit roads, that thing is a deathtrap. Too many SUV's for me to feel safe.

So, I'm looking for something around 8-12k, reliable, not extremely small, but relatively safe. I was thinking a new Hyundai, because the warranty is impressive, but I dunno. I think I'd rather get her something like a Focus hatchback that's got some miles on it.

She likes the CRX, and has said "I want something that looks the same, but is bigger and new." What can I say, she's a chick

So, what can I expect to find for that price range with less than about 50k miles on it?

My girlfriend bought a Hyundai Elantra. Sure, the warranties a good one....but I'd rather have a poor warranty and never have to use it, then a good one with my car in the shop all of the time. Her car has been in the shop like 4 times this year(it is a 2000) and the automatic tranny feels like it's starting to slip= more time in the garage.

I would recommend maybe an Impreza L...couple years old. You might be able to get one a bit cheaper if you're ok with a little damage. As far as used cars go....some of the best are probably: civics, accords, Impreza's. Some to avoid would be escorts, cavaliers, K cars.

Check out the private classifieds. You can pick up a 99 RS at a great price. Much better than a Focus I think.
