Question Interesting ?:Where are Subarus built?

I know I know... Indiana, but there's more to it than that, hear me out. I know our cars are built in Indiana, but do we export any of those LHD vehicles, to Europe maybe? And I'm assuming the JDM cars are made in Japan, but what about the UK and AUS cars, are they produced in Japan and then shipped? Where are the LHD European cars made? And where were the (now discontinued) RHD Postal Legacys built? It would seem to make sense to build the RHD cars in Japan and ship them over, particularly with a small build quantity, it wouldn't make sense to tool up a whole line in Lafayette jsut to make a few hundred postal cars a year. Anyone with any knowledge of Subaru build sites?

RS's are built in Japan and shipped over. Same thing with the new WRX's. Some of the other models are built in the plant you referred to.

Funny if you look on your driver's side, inner door frame (I think it was) - 99% Japanese parts 1% other. I think I have a Mitsubishi belt on the motor somewhere...

Hey if you guys still have all the paperwork from your car if you bought it new. There is a white almost three by five sticker next to the factory window sticker with all the options and do-dad's. I just got my 01 preza in october after a four month wait for mine to be built and assembled in Japan! The little white sticker has the part content and final assembly point on it. If my memory serves me well, it was in a Japanese city that started with an "O".. Someone jump in when ever they feel like it from here.

All Impreza are made in Gunma, Japan. I think the Foresters too.

Alright this is what my sticker reads:

Parts content information
For vehicles in this carline:
U.S./Canadian parts content: 1%
Major sources of foreign parts content:
Japan: 99%

Note: parts content does not include final assembly, distribution, or other non-parts costs.

For this vehicle:
Final assembly point: Ota, Gunma, Japan
Country of Origin:
Engine: Japan
Transmission: Japan

I knew it started woth an O had to go to my car and get it, it would have bothered me all day and I wouldn't get anything done.

Ken, I got a look at the belts when I was installing my underdrive pulley, they were labeled "Mitsuboshi" Their logo was three triangles arranged in a pattern similar to MitsubIshi's three diamonds. Got a chuckle out of that You might have the same belts on yours too.

Look at your VIN. If it starts with J, your car was built in Japan. If it starts with 1 or 4, it was built in the US.

Don't know what Subaru ships where. I bought a US spec 1990 Toyota Corolla Wagon (it was an AllTrac, thank you!) in Europe. At the time, the Corolla was built in both the US and Japan, but Toyota would not ship US built cars to Europe, only Japan built cars.

Mercedes builds a fair number of E class sedans in Mexico, but will not ship them for sale in the US. I don't think they ship the M Class anywhere outside of the US.

Of course, Ford only builds (assembles, anyway) Crown Victorias in Mexico. That way they are classified as imports and don't count against the CAFE standards.

Its a weird world.

That's pretty interesting there guys.

My MY00 RS was assembled in Indiana, and my old mans 1989 Crown Vic was assembled in Canada, NOT Mexico.

Maybe you guys on the west coast get your stuff from Mexico and Japan...but those of us on the East coast don't.

Mercedes does export the M Class, and in very high numbers mind you. They don't export near as many as they used to, however. MB built a plant in Europe? to help meet demand. They are also expanding the plant in Vance, Alabama, nearly doubling it in size and capacity. The M Class is due for a redesign in the near future. (Side note: the plant in Vance also produces M Class models that are not even sold in the US. US models are the ML55, ML320, ML4XX. They also make an ML1XX and an ML2XX that are not sold in the US)

BTW, What is CAFE?

SIA does export Legacies to Japan and England. Maybe those are RHD. Check out their website here .

Silversuby - That's one rare RS you have if it's built in Indiana. My OBS is built in Gunma, Japan.

crash -

I wasn't sure on the MB.

Shifting Crown Vic manufacture to Mexico occurred in the mid 90's.

CAFE is the Corporate Average Fuel Economy requirement. It's purpose to decrease fuel consumption in the US, but, kinda like the cable law made your cable bill go up....

Its kinda weird, because trucks don't count, and neither do imports.
