Default steering rack coming loose. anyone else?

A few months back I had the high-pressure fluid lines come loose that many others seem to be experiencing. I didn't loose much fluid though, and had it fixed quickly.

I don't know if it's at all related, but now I'm seeing vertical play in the rack itself (not the whole assembly, but the actual rack -- the straight bar with gear teeth cut into the top that actually moves the tie-rods.) If you grab the end of the rack on the left side, it has a couple millimeters of play. And it makes a heck of a banging noise when hitting small, sharp bumps.

The first thought was that it was actually just worn inner-tie rod joints, but they were replaced and didn't help at all. The dealer is now telling me that movement in the rack is normal (with no explanation for the metallic banging noises when hitting bumps or the observation that none of the other WRX's I checked had slack in the rack.)

Has anyone else experience this kind of wear in the rack? The car has less than 30k miles on it, BTW.

perhaps your steering rack bushings are shot? those things are pretty soft rubber and there have been quite a few folk complaining about loose racks and off center steering due to the bushings being worn. Whiteline has a heavy duty steering rack bushing that they sell for $20 or so. Driver's side is challenging to install but they are awesome. Such a small insignificant part works wonders. Do a seach for steering rack bushings for more reviews and threads.

I'd also try changing out the steering rack bushings. It's an inexpensive mod that makes a difference. The Whitelines worked for me.

Hmmm... I'll have to check the bushings.
