I need the help of all the webmasters out there
I am consistantly annoyed about not being able to post my pictures and ideas in a pictoral format on this fantastic board. I am going to build myself a webpage to help accomplish this..
THE PROBLEM: I have no clue how to build a webpage..I know what I want it to look like..but the way to get their and maintain it.. THE SOLUTION: Insert words of wisdom and fill the screen with insightful ideas and advice to help me..this is where you come in. I know about all these free webpage offers on these various sights like yahoo.com.. but they dont offer the flexibility I want and you are constantly placed into premade template thats very hard to adjust and change to my liking.. thanks guys, give me wrench I build car.. give me computer I solve problems.. make me build software.. well.. I call computer guy.. hahaha The truth of the matter is I have a copy of Microsoft Frontpage2000 at home and I have not even opened the box yet.. is it a good way to go.. I await the outflow of wisdom ... SCRAPPYDO stephen

No Microsoft program is a good way to go, but it's all we're stuck with.
FrontPage is a very simple, yet somewhat powerful tool for building webpages. If all you want to do is throw some information about you up and some pics...it's perfect for you. If you're into building db's and stuff...you will need to get some other/more software. |

FRONTPAGE is the way to go ...
*very easy to use *you can learn in minutes *copy / paste I built our website at work using Frontpage in about 10 minutes..OK, I didn't build it in 10 min, but you catch my drift. Mike 99 EBP Civic Si |

Frontpge is decent for layout but it outputs horrible code (for the rest of us who edit it by hand). Usually the code is barely Netscape-compatible, unfortunately. Just don't get into the advanced things of Frontpage and you won't break code for Netscape (with crappy CSS code, usually).
You might want to take a look into Macromedia Dreamweaver (get a shareware version to check it out) and see if you like it. Right now, it seems to be the choice of the professionals. Personally I code all by hand, but it is time consuming (helped me learn to type quicker though). The one biggest advantage is that you get exactly what you put into it. I've probably put a lot more time into www.mwsoc.org laying it out so far then was put into this site laying it out (no offense, Alex). |

another question may seem simple.. but I truely dont know the answer.. once I design my own page.. how the heck do I get it on the net.. I know that you can design it offline and then post it on the net.. but the question is where do you do that..
thanks for your answers.. they are a big help.. SCRAPPYDO |

All your looking for is a place to post pics? I design/implement webservers running FreeBSD/Apache, if all you need is a directory, I should be able to hook you up with something....

Geocities is a fairly good place, and they don't place a banner to ruin the site, just a small layer window that you can close. Only other place I'd suggest is www.prohosting.com for a free page.

Similar to Geocities, there is Tripod. You get 50MB of free space + 25MB of offline space. They have tools available on their web site for you to download as well. Enough for all your car pictures. I use either FrontPage or one of the Adobe product line for web authoring.
To quickly catalog pictures from meets/bbq's/races: go download a web thumbnailer program. I think I use a shareware one called "Web Thumbnailer". I just run my pictures through it, and then upload the thumbnails it created and upload it all to my web site. It's easy after you do it a few times! Ken |

FrontPage is IMHO one of the worst piles of vomit to issue forth from the M$ juggernaut of late. Maybe that was too harsh but... Dreamweaver is probably the best visual editor out there; I've tried em all. It also helps you learn HTML because you can keep a live view of the actual code as you edit visually. There is no getting out of learning HTML if you are serious about building webpages. Fortunately, it's simple. Ignore all the post-1996 crap like ActiveX, [insert name here]Script, Java, CSS, etc. and keep it real. I provide low-cost consulting for any interested parties ... portfolio is down at the moment but let me know if interested. BTW I really like my web hosting company. Go to http://www.choberi.com/ for a link. |

I use Allaire's HomeSite. It's pretty easy to use, and best of all, it doesn't mess with your code. It's the next best thing to hand coding, since you work directly with the HTML, but it helps fill in some repetitive stuff and links and such. IMO, it's a pretty good way to learn how HTML works without getting too frustrated.

I appreiciate all the offers.. but I am rather sure I can figure it out once you fine fellows point me in the right direction.. I dont want a e-business... just a basic very well laid out web page.. something people will enjoy looking at.. not just some of my pictures.. I will have to do some really heavy research on it. A well laid out web page is more art than anything else.. so I will have to put some thought in it... should be a blast.
It seems that some hate front page.. some like it..I think for my fundamental use I will only scratch the surface of what it can do... so I do belive it will be alright..anytime advanced features get used compatibility problems arise.. so I will just see what happens.. after I do build on, then what.. can you post it on geocities or thingslike that? I am glad you guys are here... SCRAPPYDO |

Don't knock geocities/yahoo...you can do full html editing and you can interface frontpage 2000 with your site. So for the frontpage uses you can work realtime with frontpage and the code users you can edit you site with there notepad looking basic html editor...and the rest of you's who don't have any knowledge of html and want to build a page yahoo has a page builder on there site too.

Be careful with Frontpage, not all hosting sites support Frontpage extensions (counters, buttons, etc.) Either don't use any of those FP features or find a server that supports them!

For those of us who still prefer coding by hand, might I suggest UltraEdit-32. It's the best text/hex editor out there, IMHO. It supports column editing, projects, and syntax highlighting. Check out the demo at
http://www.ultraedit.com/ I just went there and 7.10b is out. Wheeee... ...and ScrappyDo, most any visual editor should be fine for you since you just wanted to put up a basic site. Happy hunting on the hosting space! Can't wait to see your new site! -Duva |

update for you guys..
I downloaded Adobe PageMill 3.0 last night.. before I get too far, is this worth spending my time with or should I just go ahead and dump it for FrontPage? I figure this board has saved me about 500 bucks in consulting fees already... Duva.. I will try not to let ya down..! SCRAPPYDO stephen |

Adobe Photoshop/Imageready and Adobe GoLive Cyberstudio is the way to go. It's mucho bucks, unless you can track down an evaluation copy. I do everything in GoLive.
All databases are implemented using MySQL and PHP extensions. Trunkmonkey was done with GoLive, and the database pulls are [edit] Mmm...attention deficit disorder...forgot to finish the sentence. I do that sometimes... done in MySQL with PHP. Trunkmonkey is Coming! I am using Adobe PageMill and quite like it. It's easy to use if you know how to use say MS-Word! Just play around with it, and you will come up with a nice page layout for your site!
Good luck! |

That's Adobe GoLive..(sorry, do tech support for InDesign all day, have to make sure you get the names right) GoLive made CyberStudio(the company is now part of Adobe)Depending on your needs, PageMill is not bad, but GoLive definitely raises that bar.

I agree too that Dreamweaver is the way to go. Though frontpage is a bit easier to use.
