Default CEL and exhaust question

I got a CEL last night and went to autozone to get it pulled and it read cat is bellow efficiency. Is this suggesting that my cat is failing? I have Borla headers and a catback from local exhaust shop which i have had for a lil over a year now. I had the guy clear it and it didnt come back on yet (30 min drive home). Ill see what happens tomarrow but does this mean I have to replace it now? and if it is messed up bad do i really need it? cuz i dont need emmisions and i dont feel or have the money to spare to get a new or high flow cat.
Thanks
Jon

No, the computer freaked cuz you are moving more air through the exhaust than it is expecting. Same thing happened on my car when I swapped a catback exhaust on. Your car is operating fine, it's just not within the expected parameters, but that isn't necessarily bad. I didn't have mine cleared, it just went away after awhile and hasn't come back.

Its just strange b/c I have had this setup for a while and this never happened...hopefully its nothing but on the other hand i wouldnt mind having a high flw cat...just need to put in more hours at work

I believe it was a p042 or something like that.

And yes, I drove mine for.. hmm.. about 2000 miles before it decided to come on. A few thousand miles later it went away.

P142 is for the Cat Effeciency below normal.. I had my stock dual cat go out and it was throwing it in.. after replacing cats.. it worked fine.. If you decide to go with aftermarket hi-flow cats.. u might need CEL eliminator to hardwire into back oxy sensor..
so you don't get it back.

I think my cat/cats are goin bad...but im not sure...today when i had my car running so it would warm up I came back to it and there was this awful smell...i dunno how to describe it but it burnt the back of my throat...this has hapened once or twice b4 but i never thought anything of it really...could this have something to do with my cats? I know my 73 nova dont have any cats and it dont smell or burn my throat. Any input guys?
Thanks

Bad cats usually give a rotten eggs, or maybe a sulfer kind of smell.

sounds like your cats starting to clog or the o2 sensor may be bad. if the cats clogin you can tell after you take it for a long drive and look under the car at the cat, bad cats will glo.
cheers,
Jim
