Question licenses plate covering

I notice that on many pictures posted that people will cover their license plate. Why would you do this? Is there something wrong with people seeing your plate? The reason I ask is if I post photos in the future I want to know what to do. Do you just paint over it in an art program
If there is something bad about seeing someones plate, why are there topics posted like, "Who has the best personalized plate"

I'm not completely sure, but I do beleive that there are reprecussions for posting the plate number of someone's car on certain message boards. Remember, most message boards about cars are privately owned and maintained and do not have to allow First Amendment Rights.

The reason is for safety/privacy. If I knew the lic. plate number, I could trace it to an address and name and then do any manner of things such as steal/damage the car, or harm the owner.

Plus, if you list your mods, or your security system, then I know exactly what to steal and how.

For $25, someone can go to any one of the numerous Web sites out there that offer PI and skip tracing services to get your name, address and phone number from your plate. Depending on the site, other information may be included (driving history, record, etc.).

They now have all the information they need to trace down your car. From numerous postings on public message boards, they know what you drive, what mods you have, how much your car is worth, possibly what you look like, possibly where you work, possibly where you go to school and possibly your schedule.

Remember, on the Internet YOYOW (you own your own words). Everything you submit to a public forum is diligently archived for later use. Search engines index and cache these pages and some (like Google) make copies available for later. USENET postings are archived for later use. Basically, if you say something in public on the Net, it's saved for later use.

Yeah. I'm babbling. It's been a long day. Also, for privacy, it's considered a privacy violation in some states to post personal information (like license plates) on public forums. Like Riceboy Page has to censor their plates because they've been threatened with legal action before.
