Unhappy J.D. Power Initial Quality Study..

You have to read this:
"The Hyundai Accent and Daewoo Nubria both outscored the Ford Focus, VW Golf and the Subaru Impreza"
Problems per 100 vehicles Average was 154(I think that's high), Subaru had 199!!!
Read this, SOA!!!

Damn a 199? With the way most dealers act towards aftermarket part, auto-x, car clubs, and inquiries about new products its no wonder they have problems. Luckily the only thing I have had go wrong was the windshield seems like it is that movie glass. Anything bigger then a mosquito hits it and the window either chips or cracks. Then there is the very inferior paint job on the RS. My only other complaints are of things the car should have had fromt he factory. Maybe they will add them on the next model?

Gee it really is no surprise.

My observations with my car alone:
Pass window slower than drivers side
Hesitation prob around 3,300 rpm
Tranny Casing Replaced
Bad Clutch/Pressure Plate/Flywheel
Headliner Rattle
C/E light for not closing gas cap all the way

But the thing that gets me the most is I'm willing to overlook all this because the car is just soooo damn fun to drive!

Good an bad considered, I'm still very satisfied with the car.

At least the exhaust system isn't choking the engine (Must. Cobra).

That's weird b/c the JD Power survey in Europe placed the Impreza 2nd of all cars, only behind the Legacy. However I think that survey was "Owner Satsifaction"... anyone know for sure?

Stickee, that's correct. In the UK Subaru are consistently at the top of the JD Power 'customer satisfaction' study.

The impreza came #1 a couple of years back if memory serves me correct. Also i think the satisfaction takes into account performance, reliability, dealer service etc.

I was surprised by that Subaru figure (199) in that US JDPower Reliability survey. As always numbers don't tell the full story. So far the only problems i've had with mine are the common slow passenger window, rattles, crappy paint etc. All minor stuff. I haven't heard of many people complaining of their stock car trans or engine blowing up.

Problems with my car (MY00 RS Coupe):

Rattles in headliner somewhere
Rattles somewhere in dash
Rattles in both door panels
Rattles in rear deck lid (with the speakers in it)
Rattles in center console (between seats)
Cup holder in center console broken - never even used it
Jack door doesn't stay closed, even after replacement
Occasional hesitation problem for no apparent reason, not whiplash bad though
Pass. seat doesn't slide easy for rear seat access
Grind into fifth at full throttle & high RPM
Rear seat had some seam stitching screwed up (trimmed and left since I barely use it)
Thin paint (BUGS scratch my front end)
Major brake dust from the front brakes for no apparent reason
Slight grinding of front brakes (related?)
Soft brake pedal occasionally
Sunroof doesn't line up flat with roof when closed (below it a good 1/16 to 1/8")
Water drains on either side of roof uneven (one gap larger then other)
Hood 3/16 to 1/4" higher on drivers side by the windshield
RE92's ('nuff said)

I'm sure I can think of more, but those are the main ones I notice. I'm going to have to bring the list to my service guy sometime and see what he says... maybe we can get a few things fixed.

I grew up driving French cars (Citroen, Renault) which are of course well known for their reliability ;-)

So for me, not having to take my car to the dealer every few months is a new experience

Maybe i should be more critical and point out all the rattles and squeaks next time i go for a service.

Lemon law Sev!!

Anyway, I have 1 problem with my RS. It's TOO DAMN FUN TO DRIVE, and it get's me in trouble. I got caught doing donuts in Carlisle, and some old dude yelled at me. It was a blast tho. I had to wash my car twice to get all the chunks of grass and mud off of it. Hopefully some of the pics will be up soon.

My center console cup holder is broken tho, but I don't really care, I'll get a new one from the dealer. A few paint chips from those ungodly huge bugs down here. One bug that hit my windshield looked like someone threw a bucket of paint on the car. I almost yacked. It was all bro.... oh....umm... sorry, anyway, the car has held up great, and it's a blast to drive. I'm really pleased.

In the UK the Impreza won the JD Power award in 97, 98 and 99 and darn it came second this year - to the Legacy. Had my previous Suby for two years and 56K miles and not one fault. Thought it had a side light bulb go once, but it was just a lose bulb in the socket. If my MY00 is the same (no faults in three months and 6K miles) I'll be more than happy.

Are Subaru shipping you guys rejects?

Those 199 problems out of 100 cars is an odd statistic because once in a while 1 car will have like 30 problems. So the number of would-be lemons is kind of on the high side, but the remaining cars are on average pretty darn good. Im not a fan of that particular stat unless you have narrowed down your choices down as far as you can and need a tie breaker. Just my $.02

As mentioned before I find the JD power surveys to be very suspect for the following reason:

The Toyota Corolla and Geo Prizm(i think) are both made on the same line at the same plant and receive different badging. If you look at the surveys these cars are consistently far apart in their rankings. This does not inspire confidence in there testing methods.

The reason I bought my RS is that my wife's '96 Outback has had Z-E-R-O problems in over 4 years and 50,000 miles. It even has the original tires and brakes. We've been LA-Seattle and LA-Yellowstone, in rain, snow, sand dunes and even hot laps at Buttonwillow. I've never seen a better car in terms of fit, finish, performance than her Outback. The white paint looks like new, the carpet and upholstery is holding up. Only a few rock chips on the windshield and a hit & run parking lot scratch on the rear bumper. My RS has been totally defect free since purchase date Feb. 26, 00 (Now over 3500 miles). (What paint problems?) It gets much better mileage than her OB and is way more fun to drive. Everything works as it is supposed to. Quality questions? I'll match our Subarus against any other car you can name. Our previous cars were an '88 Taurus wagon and a '90 Eagle Talon Turbo AWD. The Subies beat them both in every way. I'm not bragging, just tired of hearing everyone whining about their car's quality problems. Do you beat them up or what?

Good Subaru Deserves this. I have had nothing but problems from my *S*T*O*C*K* parts on my impreza.
my sc00bys been in the dealer longer than it's been with me..

How many times you ask? To recap I've been at servicing exactly 26 different times. i've had my car for 1 year.

I have had my 00 RS sedan for four months, I have 12,000 miles on it.(I drive it alot) I have had no problems worth going to the dealer over.

I had the headliner rattle, fixed it with a small piece of packing foam between the liner and the roof drain tube. I had a popping sound as the driver's window rolled down, that went away on it's own. My windows all roll down at the same rate. There are a few creaks and groans, 'driveway creaks' but nothing more than I would expect with stiff-ish springs.

That's it! I have been very happy with my car so far.

I've never even reset my ECU, and the car runs exactly as it did when I bought it.
