Impreza GC8 What dont you like about the GM/GC?

Am I going to get flamed to death?

Besides the usual wheel bearing/O2 sensor/not-so-smooth 5spd...what are your other complaints about the GC (RS in my case)?

The one thing that really bugs me is the fact that I can not do a proper PLUS 0 (225/50/16) or PLUS 1 (225/45/17) wheel/tire upgrade without rubbing! Even on a "stock" car, it is a very good chance I will rub with 225/50/16 what a waste of nice 16x7 OEM wheels...

Why cant I just get some nice 17" wheels (proper offset) with 225/45/17 tires, drop it 1" - 1.5" and have a great looking and nice handling car?! I dont want to experiment with rolling fender/removing fender lining/rubber strips. I want to put the wheel/tire on, lower it if I want and just forget about it!

anything else?

Lack of a turbocharged engine option. No folding rear seats. One cup holder.

The pros way outweigh the negatives though IMO.

The ONLY thing I don't like is the placement of the cupholders and the front visors. They are very cheap looking compared to everything else in my car. My black leather w/red stitching interior make my car look like a luxury sports car, but then you see those damn visors! It's just not right. I also actually have a set of 225/45/17 and I rub. So that sucks just like you said.

Weighs too much. Where's my standard AL hood SOA. No turbo for me too, a 2.2T instead of the 2.5, mmmmm. I rub with 205/55R16s on stock wheels. WEAK

JC - The Azenis are more like a 215 in width and the blocky sidewall doesn't help clearance either.

FHI should have given it 185/195 hp in NA form, an AL bonnet and a bit stiffer suspension (perhaps V5/6 struts w/SPT springs) from the factory.

Either way, I love the "classic" Impreza (as the Brits call them) and plan on driving one for a while.

Now, if they gave us all that awesome stuff from the factory, what would we long to upgrade our car with?

j/k. So far I'm pretty pleased with the suspension. I do really dislike how they put the smaller spoiler on the RS sedan. They really should have made that an option. An aluminum bonnet would have been nice as well. Better airflow to the engine would have been nice. It seems to lose a lot of power at high RPMs.

No folding rear seats, I could so use that. It should come with better tires, RE9poo's just plain out suck.

Thumbs up

My gripe lately is a CEL that won't go away. First had to replace valve gaskets, then my coil. Something's amiss and I will figure it out.

But I digress....

I'll address each person who's responded so far, since I like all the replies.

balajc,
The tire upgrade thing wouldn't bug me, I guess, since I'm a +1/-1 kind of guy. 215/45-17 would be fine with me if I moved up to a 17" for summer (and I might, next year). To help with sidewall flex, I'm going to move my 16" wheel size to 205/50 instead of 205/55. Subarus used to have that system instead, and supposedly the 50-series actually yields more accurate speedometer readings. (North_Ursalia tested it using a State trooper, I think!)

Engine horsepower concerns/complaints I don't side with. Yeah more hp would've been nice, but the EJ25 dropped into a car several hundred pounds lighter than the car the engine was accustomed to (Legacy/Outback) was a pretty nice move on Subaru's part. It wasn't a WRX, no, but I've no complaints. Although I wouldn't argue with another 10hp or so.

Billy,
No folding rear seats ticks me off too!! I owned all hatchbacks prior to my RS, so the tiny trunk sucks. But I've gotten by alright.
As far as the cupholder though? You can replace the single one with a dual cupholder from the Legacy. Lots of us did it. Very simple to do! www.subaruwrxparts.com or www.subaruparts.com will likely have them still.

CrazyMike13,
The visors look cheap I guess, yeah, but I think the WRX guys lucked out with the little center visor. THAT I wish I had, since I get a lot of morning glare on my commute. The black/red leather was a nice option. I almost got it, but went with dealer-option light grey instead.

JC,
No aluminum hood, yeah that sucks. Would've been easy for SoA to import the GC WRX aluminum hood and use it, instead. I plan on getting one, but still...

quentinberg007,
YES! Finally someone who agrees that the coupe spoiler should've been an option. I've been on the prowl for a cheap RS coupe spoiler for over a year. Want one badly, but one that's already white. Saw so many sell for next to nothing, a couple years ago... I guess I missed the rush or something. Most are selling for decent prices, but none in white. The repaint would cost enough to not make the purchase worthwhile.

jac,
I SO agree. I would've bought the wagon if it was an option. Ohhhh yes. In hindsight I should've bought the L wagon anyway.
RS front bumper, some JDM underbody goodies and a few other things later, and the car would've been a one-of-a-kind, nearly.
Besides, the EJ22 was like **the** tuner Subie engine!

Which I definitely don't have.

So it's Aspen White from the factory? How much would you want for it outright? [email protected] (Let's keep this out of the thread.)

-no folding seats (always been a gripe since i had a GT first)

-no heated seats (those came in my WRX and they're nice!)

-no intermittent wiper/washer mode (ala my WRX and GT)

-no rear window wiper/washer (how cool would that be!)

-carpet and interior are a bit thin.... would have been nice to have a higher level interior

-dash cupholder is in the most useless place EVAAAAR
(what were they thinking?)

-tired of cat/o2 related CEL's...

and guys... any subaru dealer can get you the aluminum hood
they couldnt install it on the car from the get-go as it wouldn't pass crash tests

but all in all? nice car
and i have no plans of selling/trading ANY time soon.

Bah, my RE730s rubbed too.

Rear wiper, how could I forget! That and the awful cupholder.

Forester dual cup holder mod worked great for me.

JC - Bring over those Azenis when I get the GF8. Wanna trade for some Rota SDR's or you still want the Zensho's???

Jamie - Thanks for reminding me that the carpet has much suX. Too thin and doesn't stay in place.

Heated seats are nice. I test drove a FXT w/them and my friends' 1.8T Golf has them.

No folding seat suX as well.

Styling = Priceless...that's why I'm getting another "classic" Impreza very soon.

How can you guys forget the fragile thin paint that chips when you look at it funny.
The tranny's notching shifting and refusal to let you do a 2-1 downshift without complex gymnatics while holding your tongue right is my number 1 peeve.
They should have had an optional sunroof for all models.

Dont need to be in 1st gear EXCEPT when i'm at a stop
so the 2-1 doesnt bother me none.... not sure why you would need 1st unless you were stopped ?

and i never use my sunroof so good point.
could do w/out it...

I would be in a GF6 had they made it available. Factory painted sideskirts would have been nice too.

The very worst part is that I have found 3, YES 3!, silver RS coupe wings in the past month, but some ******* hit my rear bumper, so I can't afford them because I need a new bumper skin. I'm also going to England for a semester so I really have to watch my money. Oh well, when I get back, I'll be doing 40 hrs per week of a $10/hour job, so I will have an STi suspension, some good summer tires, as well as a silver coupe wing

lots of minor complaints that weren't listed above:

*should have came with a trunklight

*should have came with a fuel door relase button

(these 2 are even on super cheap econocars)

-wind noise

-rattling

-I had a bunch of problems with those little electrical lights going out. eg. my dash no longer says when cruise is on, the backlighting for my emergency switch went out, etc.
