Post 17" vs 18" Wheels

What is the best all around size? Ride, cornering, straightline grip, looks, are all factors.

Most likely 16 inch.I read where scc done a test on 16,17,& 18 inch wheels and the 16's had best 0-60 times. Also depends on weight of the wheel.I guess the thinner the tire the better handling you get but you get a harsher ride as well.I think 17" would be the best choice if you want a larger wheel.I feel probably like some others feel and that is a bigger wheel looks nice but its not as good for performance, these are just my thoughts so if anyone knows more for sure add your thoughts.

I would use 17in for autocross. 17in got less tire sidewall, so it will be easier to go through turns. That's an advantage.

I would use 16in for 1/4 mile and street driving. 16in is lighter than 17in. Also, with potholes and all, you have less chance of scratching or warping wheels with 16in. I used to drive an Integra w/ 17in wheels. I had flat tires and scratched wheels every so often because we have bad roads here.

I think 18in is a little too much for our car. It'll be heavier, and your butt will hurt more.

I would think that a good rim/tire combo would be light, strong and have little sidewall flex.

16's and 17's would get my vote but I read that the new Subaru WRC (or was it the SCCA entry?) uses an 18" wheel for tarmac and 15" for gravel stages. Maybe they use 18"s to get wider rims to get a larger footprint. 15"'s to get more rubber to protect the rim.

I would not willingly run a rim greater than 17" on my car. You will have slower lap times, and get snakebites all the time. Just not practical.

True it may not look practical, but damn it looks good to be rollin on 18's. 18's are good just for cruizen the local strip. I have 18's on my MY01 RS and there fine for drivin around town and beatin some poor SI drivers silly. 17's are a good all around size unless your offroad!

Keep it real,

Sorry about this being in the wrong forum. I realized my mistake after I posted it.

I would say 17" is the best too. You can fit larger brakes in 17" wheels than in 16". As far as weight, it seems that you would have less rubber and that would counter act more steel. I would like to see weight of wheel/tire combos. The latest SCC had a wheels buyer guide. It had weights for all the wheels. The lightest 18 incher I found was 18 pounds. The lightest 17 incher I found was 13.
