Post Supply and demand

I was just talking with a friend of mine that works at the Dodge store up the street from our dealership. It is owned by one of those "Mega-dealers." They have a total of 14 Chrysler stores. I had noticed they had a PT Cruiser sitting in front about a week ago.

As we were talking I mentioned it, and he said Oh yeah, we sold it on Friday for $11,000 over sticker. I had already seen them going through the auto auctions bringing $1000-$2000 over sticker (That is to dealers too.)

I realize that this is a "new toy" on the market and that there are not many of them out there at all, but SHEESH! It is based on a NEON chassis.

I almost wish the RS's were that rare.

Yeah 2 weekends ago when I was in MI i saw at least 300-400 of them. I guess MI gets the newest cars from the Big 3 first...

$11,000 over sticker? Seriously? It is not as if the PT Cruiser is going to be a limited edition. Heck, it's only a cleverly clad econo-cruiser. They are going to produce scads of these things. $11,000... wish I had that kind of money to waste.

PT Cruisers are gonna be just like the New Beetle - high demand, high mark ups. That was three years ago. Today, the Used Car lots are littered with New Beetles. It's a fad - an expensive one for consumers, a lucrative one for dealers.

That's the law of Supply and Demand.

Anyone remember how long the wait was to get a Mazda Miata? My co-worker waited a year to get his when it first came out.

Edit - I can't believe I spelled it the same as "The Beatles"

That's probably why a saleperson told me the MY01 non-turbo RS was going to be $24k. WTF!? All it's going to get is a std. cd player and gauge pack. I can't get a new car yet, that's just unfair!

$24k for a non-turbo car? Maybe he got the price mixed up with an Outback Legacy GT? That's sounds too much. For a $1000 more than that, I'll settle for a bare bones Audi A4(CD and leather standard).

That supply and demand problem with the PT Cruiser wont last for long, and those that paid over invoice will be kicking themselves soon. I read that they have slated 100,000 PT Cruisers for production THIS YEAR ALONE. I haven't even heard of Honda S2000's going for 11,000 over sticker and there's only 5000 comming to america.

That's just plain stupid. So far since its introduction, the PT Cruiser has become Chrysler's BEST SELLING VEHICLE. Kind of like Lee Iacoca saved them once, the PT Cruiser is slated to save them now, Chrysler expects it to be the best selling car they've ever made.

The internet car dealerships - carsdirect, etc - are selling them at less than $1000 over MSRP. I can't imagine paying $27k for a car that lists at $16k ($11k over MSRP). Amazing...

Amazing what marketing can do.. C&D or one of the other TV mags reviewed it and said something like "remarkable space in a package that's actually shorter than a mid size sedan." So you have a rather ugly ghetto cruiser smaller than the family sedan masquerading as an SUV/Caravan that costs far more than it should. So very, very sad. You can already get a body kit for that ugly thing ("turn your PT Cruiser into a PT Bruiser" - I SWEAR that's what the ad said) and we can't even get spare parts when our RS's get into fender-benders. Again- very, very sad.

My good friend is the Finance manager for the largest Chrysler dealer in Georgia. He said that they may have to turn people away and possibly refund peoples deposits because the demand far outweighs the supply. I wonder if I can get one with wood panels on the side!
