Default Best battery for 98 OBS?

Hey guys, what is the best nationally available battery for a 98 OBS (35 series) for cold weather cranking? The Walmart special that I bought two years ago already needs replacing and I want to buy a good, strong battery this time with a good reputation. I have Sears, Walmart, Costco, etc. near me as well as auto supply stores.

An Exide spiral cell will run less money is about the same.

I had a post up in NESIC about the Optima Red Top a few days ago, I was battery-shopping too. (It's -7 degrees here in NH, not including the wind chill. AAA New England got 6,000 calls today alone for jump starts...)

I was leaning towards the Red Top, even though it was more expensive, because I knew it's cold crank ability was better, and I thought the warrantee was better. Correct on the first account, wrong on the latter.

Sears' warrantee on the DieHard Gold is actually better. Both have 3-year replacement warrantees (meaning if it dies within 3 years, you get a freebie), but the DieHard has a 100-month pro-rated one. Optima's warrantee isn't as good. (Sears also carries them.)

The cold crank on the Red Top is 720. Gold is 640. So the Optima wins there, as well as being spill-proof and supposedly lasting much longer. However, if the warrantee isn't better, to me that says something... Plus I didn't really want to spend the extra money on it. I had a gift card that I got for Christmas from Sears, so that cut some cost off as well.

Personally, 80 extra CCAs won't do much for me. The DieHard's 640 is already significantly higher than the OEM battery I think, which lasted me 3.5 years as it is. Besides..... if Sears for whatever reason stops carrying Optima, I *KNOW* they'll always have DieHard. And you can get a Sears battery replaced or whatever in just about every town in the northern hemisphere.
Came down to convenience, I guess. But the warrantee thing cinched it... As well as my gift card.

(Optimabatterystore.com has Red Top group #35 for $94 including shipping, though. Best price I've found anywhere, beats Sears' cost by $26. But still, for me I guess it's nice to be able to go to a Sears if I have to...)

My battery is getting slower and slower on cranking here in SE MI but she still fires up.

I'll be checking into a new battery soon.

thx. for all the advice guys/gal.
