Subaru Stars Maremont's Volt stainless catback

I just got Maremont's Volt prototype catback exhaust for the WRX test-fitted to my car today in Loudon, TN. They kept the best prototype, and they are sending it with corrections to become a production unit, both in stainless and titanium. I kept the second best for testing until production units are available.

I love this sound of a mandrel bent 3" exhaust, and agree that the silencer is an unfortunate necessity in the downtown areas. I'm seeing much more stable boost, quicker spool-up, less boost spiking, and more power over 4000 rpm than I was ever used to before. Also, there is more power over 80mph in 4th than I remember. The first three gears seem to flick by in a blur. I'm getting wheelspin in 1st and 2nd around tight corners in light throttle where I wasn't before. The engine revs faster.

My favorite part is that the off-throttle lurch I've been training myself to avoid is GONE! You can just totally lift, and ... nothing happens. There seems to be a slight drop in low-end off-throttle torque, which I'm used to using for slowing the car before corners or on the highway when I creep up on a slower car. But, mid-range torque was increased, and upper-range torque seems to continue longer in the revs.

Full boost kicks in and holds solid at a tick under .9 bar (the stock WRX boost rates at .87 bar).

All in all, a great upgrade. I look forward to trying out the prototype titanium cat-back! Supposedly, it saves around 20-25 lbs from stock! Interesting "fact" (just a rumor, not confirmed) Titanium is the most abundant metal on Earth. Anyone know?

Still enjoying the exhaust. A slight rattle developed in the third brake-light assembly, which I assume is normal after running a 3" exhaust for so long. I'm looking into some felt washers to cure the problem. Still no complaints.

I've noticed some other WRX cat-backs that my friends are getting for their WRXs. Some are pretty sweet, but I can't really compare the power since they power-shift, and I'm too queasy about my drivetrain to treat it that way. I have nearly-identical acceleration, but lose car-length during shifts. I think what I'm losing is in my smoother clutch engagement.

Another exhaust I saw had a trick silencer... it had slots cut around the edge, and by adjusting a bolt and moving a plate, you could open or close moon-shaped cut-outs around the center exhaust exit. But, that exhaust had a smaller center I.D., a larger tip I.D., and only one bend. I don't like the look of the "melon launcher"... where it turns at the axle, and comes angling back and up and towards the driver's side. Also... that particular exhaust wouldn't easily let the silencer come loose. I had some trouble with mine the first time I put it in. I ended up getting a coat hanger and some gloves, and walking it out. I had to scratch up the inside of the silencer, but those scratches quickly get covered by soot anyhow... right? Ah whatever... I never use it except to visit the fam`.

Thanks MareMont !!
