Default Nikon D70 preview up at DPReview.com...

Sounds like a great camera - but no image posts until the full review. Word on the street is that its biggest weak point is high-ISO performance, which immediately takes it out of the running as far as I'm concerned, but it's interesting nonetheless...

The D70 is Nikon's answer to the new sub-$1,000 digital SLR market, its clear competition being the Canon EOS 300D (Digital Rebel) announced last August. The D70 is revealed by Nikon exactly two years since the D100, the D70 appears to share quite a lot with its sibling including the six megapixel CCD sensor, 3D color matrix metering and Multi-CAM900 auto focus system. The D70 also appears to have quite a bit going for it which are the primary complaints for EOS 300D owners, flash exposure compensation being one of them.

A downgrade from the D100? Not at all.
People's first reaction to the D70, especially existing D100 owners was that it doesn't appear to be a downgrade from the D100. Indeed, this is also my reaction. Yes, the D70's design is simpler than the D100 and the menus have larger type face, there are some custom functions missing and you can't add a vertical hand grip. But in all other respects the D70 is as good as and in some cases better than the D100. This then makes the naming convention a little odd. This also raises another note of interest, the D70 is already looking better than Canon's EOS-300D.

Up with skirts,
down with pants!

I'm waiting for a comparo between the 300D and D70, although if I ever decide to go digital, I'd prolly lean towards the Canon because I already own Canon glass and accessories.

I'm looking forward to this, since I already have Nikon glass...can't wait to play around with it!
