Question Best engine mods for a newbie??

As some of you may know, im a newbie. I have a 2001 Impreza RS. I just want to get different opinions. I just ordered a weapon-R intake so im looking forward to that. Keep in mind that im on a limited budget so i DONT have 2500$ to spend on a turbo, or shocks and springs, or wheels. Right now im trying to keep it all under 5-600$ Comments? Suggestions?

Go ahead on your intake. I used to own a Civic, and here's the order that my mods goes. (of course, sold it and got the Impreza L now)

Akimoto Intake, 15" rims and tires, 1.3" lower spring, 5 way adjustable shocks, 7.5 mm Ultra spark wires, custom cat back exhaust(2.5"), dump the 7.5 mm and goto 9mm Ractive wires, cross drilled rotors, MSD ignition, 4 point bosch plugs, headder.

I was planning on doing the cam gears and the pulleys, but I sold my car. ~_~

Ok, I was in your position, I have 700 bucks or whatever to blow so why not buy this and this and then that. My suggesstion: SAVE YOUR MONEY. I regret buying the flash before the performance. Save your money till you have a good 3k or 3500 and drop a turbo in it. Larry's intake is very nice though. There is one mod that must aboslutely be done right away: Sway bar! Get an 18 or 20mm on it. They are cheap too so dont worry about spending serious bucks.

day-long advanced driving school using your own car - $300-400

It'll do more for you than any intake an exhaust ever could.

I agree with the auto crossing and such, but for the best changes...get tires and an adjustable rear sway bar...those two things will make your car soooo much more fun to drive. An exhaust is GREAT for sound, not too much power, throttle response yes, power no. An intake, oh hell yes, get it. AFter that its all up to budget, turbo, heads, cams etc.......

i have a pulley and a weapon-R intake and they work awesome for me. Granted i went all out in the suspension cause of rally's and putting my rollcage in too so i can prorally.
But i would put an intake and an exhaust caust they do alot and then race. Why drop 3500 into a turbo if you are gonna hate racing...that would make no sense..

You wont get too many answers from the older guys, cause this question has been beat to death. Please do a search first from now on.

I have a MY00...only difference between mine and yours is 10K miles, color and carbon fibre trim.

I got a Weapon R myself first. Sounds great, not really noticable with the butt dyno. Mine did NOT come with all of the parts needed, and the instructions suck. On top of all of this, there is a big controversy as to whether the RS runs rich or not with the Weapon R installed.

Second, I got an 18" sway bar. BIG DIFFERENCE. You can feel the difference every time you take a bend, and you'll like it alot.

I would suggest tires next. Not even necessarily for better handling, but our RE92's suck, especially for the price. Check out www.tirerack.com and look at the survey results. Keep in mind that tires not only affect handling, but stopping distance, acceleration, road noise and several other things.

I found a tire for $89 that is better than the RE92's which cost $139 in every area surveyed. The BF Goodrich Touring T/A VR4.

It really depends on how serious you want to be. Here is what Larry suggested to me:

-2.25" catback exhaust
APEXI [www.subysports.com - 590]

-tires [www.tirerack.com] (Bridgestone RE730)
-front strut tower bar[jcsports - 109]
-short shifter [www.subysports.com - 379]
TOTAL FOR STAGE TWO: ~$1000, assuming 100/tire

-ligtened flywheel [subysports - 550]
-mild performance cam [www.cobbtuning.com - 650]

Approx HP = 200-210 at crank.

That was all given to me from Larry a while back. Good luck with whatever you decide.
