Factory oil temp gauge broken........
Anybody ever have the oil temp gauge on the factory gauge pack stop working? I imagine it's the sending unit but I'm not certain. Just stopped working today, worked fine yesterday though. Where can I get a sender?
Thanks, -AK

Would it be covered under the bumper to bumper warranty? That is if you are still under 36,000 miles. Otherwise, maybe you can use a sending unit from Autometer or something, but I'm not certain.

My oil temp gauge broke about a month ago. The dealer said the sensor was broken. But they fixed it for me for free because it was still under warranty. If your car is over 36K miles, they won't do it for free.

I know that this is an old thread, but Im having an issue with my oil temp gauge and I decided to bump this old thread instead of starting a new one to prevent any responses that consist of "search". On my 02 WRX I have the whole gauge pack installed and the oil temp gauge has recently been acting strange. It reads at 180 C (max temp) when I start the car and when I rev the engine, the needle goes to 50 C (lowest temp) and then when in driving it will sometimes wander back and forth between temps. Eventually it settles down and seems to be reading the correct temp. Im assuming its either the sending unit going bad or the wiring is shorting out/loose or it could be a bad ground. What do you guys think?

Where is your temperature probe installed. If it is an oil pan install, I am betting that you have a cracked, broken or shorted wire just outside the probe.

The oil temperature sensor for the factory gauge is known to be troublesome. I battled with my dealer over erratic oil temp readings for quite a while. They finally installed a new gauge only and the problem came back almost immediately. I installed a new temperature sensor and that solved the problem.

Finally! Thank you guys for some answers. the temp probe is the factory one located in the oil pan. I assumed it was a short, thanks for confirming it. Any suggestions on how to prevent it from happening again once I get a new sensor? I'll probably try to wrap it in electrical tape or heat shrink tubing if possible.
