Default Newb trying to decide

What up, kinda new to the boards, just been looking around latley. I have been looking the the WRX and 2.5 rs. I am on sort of a budget and i think its going to come down to just a civic ex, or the 2.5 rs. There are trade offs to both i know, i am just looking for some opinions. I know both will be very good cars lasting a long time, but maybe you guys can tell me stuff i dont already know.

I like the 2.5 rs, i have yet to test drive, what do you all think? It's 165 hp, what are we talking to the wheels w/ a manual, ive test driven the wrx, how comparable, i know one is turbo'd but other than that? Also i know its AWD which is way attractive considering im in Chicago, but does the car respond well? any bugs out there, like the rear being a little on the light side? Im basically just looking for any information that someone other than a saleman can let me in on. Thanks,

I think you will love either car. You really need to test drive the RS and see what your opinion is though. I don't have any earthshattering comments, but here is what I think:

Hondas will drive forever. Plain Jane styling. Huge aftermarket. Great fuel economy. But.......everybody and their brother has one.

Subarus dependablility is very high. Better styling. Good aftermarket. Worse fuel economy due to the AWD. Stands out in the crowd.

Being in the snow belt, you really will get an appreciation for that AWD though. You will laugh winter away as you watch everyone else do those famous one wheel burnouts at stop signs. You will just motor along without a care in the world. Mind you AWD doesn't mean you can drive like Johnny Madhouse, but it does give extra piece of mind.

Drive the RS, I think you will make up your mind after being behind the wheel.

I'm an RS owner mostly because I'm cheap and don't like turbo lag. That said the RS has adequate performance and will save you money on gas and insurance. However, you really should test drive a WRX before you decide because they are pretty special and a kick in the pants to drive.

The RS has way more low-end torque than the Civic; great for city driving. The WRX is a lot more fun but the RS has more than enough power for most people.

On the other hand, the Honda will be cheaper. Civic EX resale value has been historically at the top of the heap. Overall costs of owning and driving the Civic over the time that you own the car will probably be several thousands cheaper, particularly as gas prices continue to rise.

From edmunds.com the five-year True Costs to Own (assuming you buy new and sell after 5 years) are:

2004 Civic EX MT w/ side airbags - $25,200
2004 Impreza RS 5MT - $29,200

Most likely neither car will be a maintenance problem for the first five years, so the real advantage of the RS is AWD. Is it worth an additional $4000 to have a car with AWD for five years? Personally, the answer to that question is maybe, but throw in the option of a wagon that can carry a decent amount and is still compact enough to easily negotiate cities and the answer becomes a resounding yes.

Test driving an RS is actually the event that lead me to eventually buying a WRX. I was so deeply impressed with the combination of a peppy motor, 5 speed and AWD, that I made the decision then and there to wait until I was ready to buy a WRX. I figured, if this car is this much fun to drive, what's the turbocharged version like?

The AWD (speaking from a WRX driver) is incredible in the snow. I commute from Peoria to Milwaukee every week and yes, I've driven through some real crap. Explorers in the ditch, FWD cars begging for traction. The WRX rocked it all. Heck, gun it in the snow and the car squats to one side and takes off like a rocket.

You can't go wrong buying an RS. I highly recommend it, but, it started my sickness for a more powerful version .
