Thought Id share my experience today with everyone. I posted this to the local forum as well. My first experience with auto-x
Well I just got back from the Evolutions Driving school and wanted to share all my thoughts with you.
First of all, It was a blast. You get an incredible amount of seat time.
I took the Phase I course on Sunday. There were nine drivers in my group, and two instructors. The lineup was me in my scoobie, 2 honda sc2000's, a celica, a very loud miata, audi TT convertible, BMW m3, a rx7, and an Eagle Talon. Not exactly an even field, but we're here to learn, not to race eachother. Im still not sure exactly what everyone elses, times where.
Starts out straight into a series of 4 salom cones, (section 1)and then a right into a 30ft circle. (section 2) Next, out the circle into a hard left that crosses back through the salom and into a long sweeping turn (section 3) through a U shaped box, and then quickly into and out of a chicago box. Moderate right (section 4) back to the cicrle again, this time reverse, and out. (section 5) It was a fairly tight course without alot of room to pick up speed. My near stock my00 shifted into second by the second cone, and stayed in second without hitting the rev limiter. Estimated top speed of about 45mph. The was all setup at the MGA proving grounds, which had a nice clean explanse of pavement in the middle of nowhere.
8:30am drivers meeting, explaining what was going to happen.
8:45 We walked the course with the instructors. They explained enough not to get lost on the course, but not much mor at this point.
9ish Time to jump in the cars. We break into groups of two, and are told to take three timed runs through the course to establish a baseline. My times were 39.607 37.269 37.170 My wonderful re92's are king of the course.
Some cone shagging later, the instructors jump in with us, and we make two runs, while they comment on out driving. Place change, and then my instructor proceeds to scare the crap out of me, and a light goes on in my head "You mean a scoobie can do *that*?!?!" he posted 35.315 and 34.845
We change places again, and I run with him as a passenger again four times. He points out thottle on and off oints, and turn speeds. 36.773 36.766 36.752 36.447 can you see the improvement already? I take two more runs without him 35.755 and 36.305 Almost a second and a half better than my fastest baseline.
Time for lunch. We discuss the times, and what section we improve on most. I did much better on the salom. .75 seconds better in a 5 second segment. Other gain was on the cicle, chicago box and the sweeper was still giving me problems.
After luch we talk about looking ahead on the course and diving to points gates ahead, instead of the next cone. My scoobie get donated for group trips around the track since I had the only back seats. They point out the correct anchor points. Time to saddle up again. I run with an instructor 3 times pointing out where I should look and pull 0.000 (error) 37.907 (Ack) and 29.793( I wish, error trip?) Okay, so its not working. Its really screwing my salom, but helping the sweeper. Nick hops in and off we go. (35.898 35.386) I try it with him again. Really Im getting it here, but the times are errors on these two runs. Time to drop off the passengers. I roar off and pull 29.334 (error), 34.308, 34.909, 34.560, and 34.871 Hey... this stuff is working! My best time is 1/2 second under either instructor! Last off all, its time for the proof. Each of us takes three runs to serve as a new base line. I only got one good time. 34.982 I managed to run over one of the timers on my second run. (oops) my best time is 2.82 seconds under my best of the first three on a 35 second course. Reasonable improvment.
I felt like the instructor were very helpful. This was a great course for me, and I certainly think it'll improve your driving.
Afterwards we setup a second, longer course for those of us who were left. I made three goes of it. I think I finally discovered why they are called im-potenza's Damn things turned to Jelly under me. Three runs on this course, and I pulled a 35.6 One of the girls who placed 2nd in nationals took out my car and got 35.1 so I made it to 1/2 under a very good driver as result of the course, and on one that I hadnt been working all day.
