Find out where the local dirtbike races are and go there. Meet people and try to find someone selling out. Usually you find them, or find someone racing who has a buddy that is getting out.

The price of a new dirtbike is just unreal, I can't believe people are stupid enough to pay that.

Anyway, that's my suggestion. Try to get a whole setup-- leathers, chest protector, helmet, gloves, boots and bike. If you get a bike alone, budget for all the gear I mentioned because you're a fool if you don't have it. Don't worry so much about the brand of dirtbike as you do about the bike's condition and age.

Thumbs up

Two awesome d/p bikes are the Suzuki DR-Z400S and the Kawasaki KLR650. The DR is a hardcore dirt bike with enough trim to make it street legal. The KLR is an adventure tourer, and would be more comfortable than the DR at highway speeds. I almost bought either of these but I decided to go with a street bike instead and got a red '00 Suzuki SV650. BTW, I love the Speed Triple too...my SV has similar naked styling.
