In about (+/-) 1992 my dad's advertising agency got the Isuzu account. One reason Isuzu was changing agencies was because the above mentioned car and all other Isuzu cars, combined, sold less than 10,000 the previous year. That is pitiful. The "Joe Isuzu" campaign was a bomb. What they told my dad was that "Joe" scared female buyers. They learn all this stuff in focus groups. Just to clarify, I am talking about their cars, not their SUV's. These beasts kept them in business. I was in love with this car. Isuzu gave my dad an Impulse RS and we promptly took it skiing. Another interesting thing about it was that the suspension was designed by Lotus Cars. The cars have a small badge on the side that says something about Lotus. It may have been a form of active suspension. All I remember was that it was less than interesting and the next day it became a company car and was promtly thrashed to bits by the employees, maybe in an accident or two. Thats my story, I'm sticking to it.

I actually had one show up at the autocross this past weekend. Pretty nifty little car. It did okay, but the car had lousy tires on it. I hope to drive it next event and see how it compares to the Subaru. Its nice to see another AWD, Turbo car...

You mean that commercial scared women? Like the one where Joe Isuzu shot a gun, got into his car, chased down the bullet while driving around a set of slalom cones, stopping the car sideways, looking at the mirror and winking at himself, getting out of the car and catching the bullet with his teeth?

I did that last week in my Impreza RS, right after I smoked an SR-71 Blackbird.

That commercial was funny. Maybe it was the one where he was crossed-dressed while driving the Rodeo.

The 89' Impulse was the car I wanted but I had no job and no money at the time.

Your dad owns an ad agency? Is he looking for a graphic/web designer/copywriter? Hee hee. Which agency is it? I used to work for HMS Partners, the people that did the stupid Kathy Lee Gifford Carnival Cruise Lines ads. Acckkkk!

I LOVED the Joe Isuzu ads! But they were targeted at men.

Another interesting fact is that the Isuzu Impulse RS shares the same floorpan as the Geo Storm and the Isuzu Stylus sedan, and the entire drivetrain from the AWD Turbo car will bolt right up! Talk about a sleeper, an Isuzu Stylus AWD Turbo or a Geo Storm AWD Turbo...

I've got to much time on my hands...

Joe Isuzu was very memorable but he did not sell cars. When it comes to making a big purchase, actuall most purchases, women usually have the final say. This, again, is from the focus groups that were run on the Isuzu cars. I think Isuzu stopped making cars for the US very soon after 1992 +/-

Kalins1, my dad's firm, Goodbye, Silverstein, and Partners, is in San Francisco, CA. They are always interviewing folks. I don't know much about his business and have always stayed away from hooking people up with interviews and such. Good luck though. I am a graphic/product designer in Washington, DC. Nice to talk to you.

A friend of mine back in college had a RS hatchback(can't remember the exact model name) that had the turbo and Lotus suspension. That thing was a screamer. It would kill the GTI's. When the all wheel, turbo Impulse came out, I always thought that would be a cheaper alternative to the Celica All-Trac. Never did like the front end of the Impulse though.

I wanted the Impulse RS SoOOooOo bad when that car came out.

It was essentially the Geo Storm (which Isuzu built) with AWD and the very same 160HP Turbo intercooled engine form the Lotus Elan.

I have seen a few of them turning up recently but most of them are pretty claped out by now.

I liked the round quad headlight front end much better than the Geo Storm (which consequently i wouldnt have been caught dead in)

One inherent handling flaw that the car has if similar to the GTI's. Under hard cornering it lifts a rear wheel and since there is no limited slip, the unweighted wheel just spins like a heathen with his hair on fire, slowing the car down...

Still among "the cars I'd like to own someday"
