Default STI questions...

I currently own a 2002 Audi S4, and have had more problems with it than I would have liked. After the new transmission, throttle body boot, diverter valves and a drivers seat that has a good half an inch of play I think I've had enough. I've been looking at the STI for a while now and it seems like a good choice to replace the S4, I just have a few questions.

Are there any re-occuring problems with STI's? i.e. on the S4 people tear throttle body boots so often some people keep an extra one in the car...

Is it a reliable car? Any major issues with components? Does subaru stand behind it in warranty repairs?

Can the wing come off? i prefer the sleeper look..

How upgradeable is it? i.e. with the S4 i added 80hp for $600 with a simple ECU upgrade...

Thanks for your help, and I look forward to good answers so hopefully I can start fresh with a new STI

None that I have.

VERY reliable. No major issues at ALL.

Comes off quite easily.

Plenty of after-market parts for it. I never had trouble finding anything I wanted.

Bottom line is, I had a friend who had an S4 drove an STI, next weekend he traded in his car for an STI. You will love it!

S4 to STi, a bit curious. You're taking a definite step down in luxury.

Sti's too "new" for long-term reliability judgements, but based on previous international sales and its WRX underpinnings, all should be okay (modded all bets are off, though it'll still be better than Audi/VW/BMW/MB). Even CR gave it a thumbs up.

Wing can come off. Do a search and you'll find many examples of what it can look like, from modded to completely removed. On the other hand, you may learn to like it. I did, and I thought I'd never...

Upgrades are here and more coming all the time. Suspension, intake, turbo, ecu, blah blah. Your S4 needed more power. The Sti is already way ahead of the Audi's power/weight.

re: Wing -

There are MANY holes in the trunk lid - consider finding a WRX/Base Impreza to swap trunks with...

It's the best performance "bargain" out there IMO. The money you save in going from an S4 to an STi can buy a lot of mods. And now that it's been out a while more and more mods are (will be) available

I went from an A4 to a WRX, which was a huge step down in luxury. Didn't think twice about it once I twisted the key

or reliability... or even being easy to work on. I will never get under another VAG car again.
