Default sunroof problems?

I'm looking at the forester XS and wondering if I should go for the premium package...
has anyone had problems with the monstrous sunroof (leaks, mechanicals, etc.)? How bad is the wind noise when it is open with bike racks on the roof?

Any help/comments would be appreciated.

Never tried it with bike racks (unless you mean the crossbars that are already on there) but I can comment otherwise. The noise from the sunroof when open is pretty much the same as most other cars I have driven with good sunroof systems. In other words, it's not whisper quiet, but you can still carry on a conversation with no problems. I've found that ALL the way back causes a lot of noise at moderate speed. there's an auto-stop 2/3'rds of the way back that seems to be just right for most speeds.

Also, I don't know if a wind deflector would help at all. Overall, it is the coolest sunroof I have ever seen, without a doubt!

I have the older model, and I never had any problems. No leaks or mechcanical. Just 2 words of advice though:

1) Try not to open it in climates where water freeze. I tried to open it one day (because it smelled like cigarette smoke after dropped off for maintenance), and I heard a scary crunch sound. I think it might have been some ice getting broken off as I couldn't find any damage to the moonroof.

2) Do not open it all the way to the back while driving at 50+ mph. Super wind noise!! Plus, it sounds as though the entire car is vibrating! Just open it like a third of the way, and you should be fine while cruising at 50+mph. If I'm stuck in traffic or the speed limit is around 25 mph, then should be good to open it all the way.

I have the Premium Package on my XT and I find the wind noise
tolerable. If you move the front cross bar on the roof rack back
behind the sunroof opening the noise is greatly reduced. As for leaks, I have run my XT through several "touch less" car washes that use water pressure to "scrub" the car and have not seen a leak so far. I think this is another testiment to Subaru's quality.

I also have FXT AT with sunroof. I have a Yakima Basket Case, and two fork mounts plus an Ankle Biter (3 bikes in total). I also put on the plastic accessory roof wind deflector. It is noisy, but the view is worth it !!! I mounted all this behind the opening so it doesn't block the view. I am certain mpg's suffer because of all this non-aerodynamic stuff on the roof. My guess: -5-10% mph loss.

Like some of the others I have an 04 FXT premium. All I can say is buy the wind deflector for the sunroof . You can acutally drive 60 and have a conversation with someone versus not being able to hear a thing over 40 IMHO. It drastically cuts down on wind noise and gives a bit of shade. Also very helpful to remove the cross bars from the factory rails or reposition as DaMax suggested, cuts down the noise even more. Simple install on the roof deflector and cheap to boot. I have had 0 problems with leaks, I have been to the snow, and also in torrential rains recently here in sunny California, and so far so good. I figure its covered under warranty so if it does have a problem I'm not paying for it. I do have to say it is one big mother of a sunroof, perfect for our left coast climate.
