Default Keep blowing fuses, Need Help!

About a month ago I was stopped by a state trooper on my way home because my tail lights had gone out. We checked it out and the brake lights still worked as well as the hazzards and reverse lights. Turned out it was a blown fuse (a 10a fuse located inside the car below to the left of the steering wheel.) Replaced the fuse and everything was normal.

Well a couple days ago my tail lights went out again but this time so did my dash and AC lights inside the car. Sure enough, I had blown that same fuse as before but this time I also blew a 20 fuse located under the hood. That explained the dash/AC lights going out.

Problem is, this time when I replaced both fuses they blow immediately once the car is turned on. I have tried using bigger size fuses (25,30, etc) but that doesnt work either.

This is becoming very annoying. Can anyone point me to some places to check? I'd appreciate it!

well i'd say you clearly have a short circuit somewhere.

It's going to take a long time to trace out the short. Start by looking at anyplace where you have peeled back the carpet and put in wires for a stereo, NO2 kit, etc... Look for any signs of damage to the insulation around the wires.

Also, be sure to check the bulbs themselves as it's possible one of the bulbs failed a way that instead of the filament just burning, it has created your short.

yeah sometimes the terminals for the bulbs get a "goo" on them. this happened in my dads yukon.....the bulbs and fuses kept going out. also is there any mods you have done recently that have included wiring?

Nope, no recent mods that included wiring. I found this thread to be interesting.


What I'm trying to figure out is, where is this illumination relay located?

Ok, went out last night and tore the car apart (Took out center console along with lower half of the dash, clock, carpet, etc.)

Found a few issues....

1) The Pink wire attatched to the e-brake handle had a bare spot of wire showing so I covered that up with electrical tape.

2) I had to wires tapped into the clock wires (one black the other white) that were just hanging down below the dash with nothing attatched to them. They must have been from something I had installed previously and then uninstalled but I can't figure out what.

3) The heavy gauge wire going into the fuse for my amp located in the engine bay had a small area where bare wire was showing. I am in the proccess of removing my amp completely.

4) There are two wires (one red one black) coming from the backside of my UTEC that I found running behind the dash and ending up below the steering wheel. The wires look uncut and were not attached to anything. This one has me stumped. Anyone have any idea what the heck these are for? I'll try and find a picture of what I mean.

Looks like they are to control another device like a nitrous or water injection kit. I think I'll just bunch them back up and tape them.

Anyways, the car is still apart and I'm sick of messing with it for now. I will probably put it back together on Wednesday and see what happens.
