Get your waranty money back. Now.
Go back to Subaru and reclaim the extendend warranty money. I did after reading this forum in length at 2500 miles. That was 8 months ago. I got back $1,400. New Springs? forget suspension warranty. Got TB? Forget anything engine wise. They do have a point after all. They just take it to an unreasonable level. Worn tire edges, all stock? Aggressive driving! No soup for you!
Sure you have to pay for window regulators etc.. but it is cheaper than the $1400 extra warranty that covers absolutly nothing of value once you put on 18's. You know, that means you drive aggressively. No soup for you! Raise hell. It will get you nowhere. Get your money back. You still have the factory 50,000 or what ever. The extended is a waste of money.

This works, I was at the dealer last night looking at my future STI choices, and he told me about this.
He was like "hey, you bought the extended right?" "with your mods they wont cover anything anyway, you could get a nice chunk off your payoff price if you dump that warranty back in" I am digging the contract up tonight and calling the guy back |

Ebeck,
Did you just call them up and say that you wanted to cancel your extended plan? When you cancelled it did they send you a check for the difference or did they take it out of the amount financed? I got the extended warranty as well thinking I was not going to mod the car very much. I don't know what I was thinking at the time. I don't want to pay for something that I am not going to use, or something that will not benefit me if I have a modded car. Thanks -Matt |

With my eclipse when I came in to get the ext. warranty repaid they do it either based on mileage on the car or on the time you've had it. If you have a 04 with 30K miles on it they'll use mileage, if you have an 04 with 2K miles on it they'll most likely use the length of time you've owned it. . . I bought the extended warranty thinking that it didn't even start until my factory warranty was up. That was incorrect, it started the moment I drove off the lot, so when I took my car in with 38K 42 months after I bought the car I got 400 + change back on my 800 extended warranty.
Just wanted to tell you so you don't get your hopes up about getting the full amount back. |

I took my paperwork down to the dealer and said I want to cancel this warranty. The extended that is. They had me sign some papers and then I got a check from Subaru in 2 weeks. That simple.

This is exactly why I didn't get the warranty...I just took 1200 and stuck it in a stock fund. After a year its already over 2200 and doesn't care if the car is modded.

Dilemma:
My 02 WRX wagon (auto) is 16 months old with 47k miles on it. Power train warranty is almost up. I bought the GOLD extended warranty at time of purchase. I thought it was a good idea because "It's not a Honda or Toyota, it's a turbo motor, it's 'an unknown' to me." I've had no claims on the extended warranty. After the first 6 months of ownership, the engine developed the "characteristic" piston slap. The noise eventually goes away after driving over 10 miles. SOA said that if the noise goes away, it's "normal" and they won't do anything about it. I never took it to a dealer....what for? The piston slap noise is very obvious when it's cold, then the engine sounds okay after driving many miles, so there is nothing they would do (and I would have the inconvenience of having to leave the car overnight...30 miles away). I don't really want my engine "flat-rated" anyway. This is my only major concern so far. I've been a paid mechanic for over 30 years, do all of my own maintenance, write everything down, misplaced a few reciepts for oil filters and gear lube (but the "proof" of service is in what the parts look like-"parts don't lie"). SOA NEEDS proof of "purchase" which doesn't prove the service was done. Just how sticky is SOA on having reciepts??? Mods: Axle-back muffler and trailer hitch. Hitch has never been used for anything (installed for bike rack). I corner very hard. Sidewalls show some scuffing (stock size SO-3's). Just what can SOA deny me? Wheel bearings (never touched a curb), piston slap (ah, you must have towed with it), ETC.!!! So.....KEEP the extended warranty or DUMP it? Am I likely to get a FAIR deal from SOA? I know there is tons of "real abuse" going on. I'd like to know just how bad (or good) it really is. Thanks!! Last edited by Columbo; 04-10-2004 at 09:56 PM. |

well with a pro-rated gold warranty based on either time or mileage (mileage in your case) you have to figure that half of what you paid for that is already out the door since your milage is soo high. I'd say it's worth it to hold onto it at this point.
If you do get it refunded you may only get 400 dollars back. on the other hand if you do have a problem down the road and it's a big one and they're not nazish about having all your recipts it could save you a bunch of money. as for piston slap, you should hear my car. It's louder than hell and has done it since day 1. |

Are you sure it's pro-rated, even if you've never had a claim? If that's the case, yeah....I'll keep it. Being a mechanic, that piston slap REALLY bugs me!!

that's how it was with my mitsu. I'd imagine that's how it is with subaru as well.

I bought my used Subaru at 48k miles. Because of the transmission issues I've been hearing about I opted for the "Added Security" plan costing me $2k. After spending more time in Nasioc and finding out that pretty much all transmission claim are being denied my "Added Security" seems pointless. This extended warranty you guys speak of...thi is the "Added Security" right? Can I just take my Agreement Registration Form to Subaru and cancel the plan?
I would much rather take the chunk of money I recieve from this and put it aside in the event that I do break my tranny. Thanks |

are you at stock power levels? If not then you should get your money back immediately. Otherwise it could wind up being worth it.
I honestly don't see the problem with the transmission at stock power levels. I've driven my car like it's stolen for the first 8K miles and my tranny feels the same that it does when I first got it. Also you have to remember why subaru is how they are with denying warranty claims. Look around and see how many threads you'll find about "dropping my car back to stock so I can take it to the dealership" |

I currently have a Vishnu stage one chip/turboback/gutted uppipe. I suppose thats not stock power levels. I'm planning on going to my dealership this week to cancel my extended warranty. I can understand Subaru's point as to why they're denying tranmission claims...but at the same note I think the numerous amount of transmission failure should at least raise some kind of redflag on SOA's side. Not the kind of redflag that says every second gear failure is abuse. Especially since SOA promotes racing (Auto-x). In truth, I really don't see my transmission failing simply because I don't abuse it. Being a family man I really am very gentle with my car. Why I even put all these performance mods on it when I don't use it you ask? Basically a hobby I've had for a long time that I can't seem to get off my skin. I don't drive the car hard...just nice to know and share with people that the parts are there. To some...sorta like collecting memorabilias.
What ails me about the whole situation is that, God forbid, my transmission might fail even at gentle driving. Then going back to the dealership to be denied. I love this car but I'm afraid to say that this will probably be my last Subaru. My previous MKIV Volkswagen may have had known issues of bad MAF's, window regulators, DV, and coilpacks...but getting denied for those claims for modding my car wouldn't be so bad cause I can actually afford to replace them on my own. If I lose my tranny I'd probably pass out knowing how much out-of-pocket I would have to fork out. I'll just put whatever chunk I get from Subaru aside and hope for the best. At least I'll have that money to fall back on if I do screw up my transmission. If not...downpayment for an Evo! |

Why would anyone buy an extended warranty on anything?
The parties involved usually make more profit out of an extended warranty (be it big screen TV, DVD player, car) than they do in the sale of the actual item being warrantied. Just say no. |

Many people buy them to feel secure that they won't have a huge unexpected bill at some point. I agree with you though.

I got duped on my added warranty. I bought my car used with 27k miles. I was dead set against getting the warranty, figuring it was probably BS, I was the "just say no" mentality as Glenn put it. After repeatedly saying no to buying it, the finance manager told me it was only $4 a month for the extended warranty. Well after hearing that, I figured at $4 a month ($240 total) it would be foolish not to get it, one minor repair would cost that much. It would be worth it, especially on a used car.
Well I buy it and the car in a glaze of WReXcitement. A week later I had to look something up on the paperwork and discover they charged me $875 for the warranty!!! I was pissed called the dealership, they played dumb and told me there is nothing I can do. I figured I'd have to eat it, so this is exciting news. Is it really true I can get the money back? Or am I better off keeping it since I am over 30k miles now? I could use the money to do the accessport I was going to do anyway and likely void the warranty Quote:

Welp...I just came from the dealership and got my refund. I paid $2k and got $1750 back. Well it went to the balance of my loan which is still kosher. So...thanks for the very useful info. That extended warranty would have either sat there till the value died out or it would have gotten voided by the dealer.
