Post Exhausts on N/A Impreza's...

I was thinking about this one, and I like the look and sound of the Stromung exhaust, but I came to a realization - the car will sound good but still be slow.

Needless to say I decided against it and to put my money elsewhere, but does anyone here agree with me on that one? I know it'll give you a few more hp, but the fact is, you'll still get blown away by a good percentage of stock cars on the road - some of them "old man" cars, too.

I got passed like I was standing still yesterday and I was doing WOT at about 50... It was a new Oldsmobile Intrigue (210-215hp, I think) with an older guy driving, mostly bald, and all white hair. *shrug*

EDIT : I know it doesn't matter the age but it was f**king EMBARASSING!!

Well since I wasn't going to a turbo anytime soon I went to Vigg Designs and picked up a universal that closely resembled the Remus. $115 (with tax) later I had the exhaust on the car. I had no problems with it and it still gave me the sound of the Boxer engine. Now that I am looking at getting the turbo I am going to have to swap in a better entire exhaust.

hehe, 8complex..this weekend (if i can find the freakin' college ) i will show you all and let you cringe at the rally sound of my impreza! All i have to say is it is at least 85 db...that is a conservative guess...and it revs better, and i can actually spin the tires from a standstill...hmm, can't remember doin
that before... ohh well. It also pops and gurgles like a rally car, and when i downshift my 4eat...back off, GAWPP BANG BURPLE BURBLE It sounds nearly identical to a rally car before this years where it sounds like a motor cycle. But i guess that is what you get when you pay about $600 for muffler alone and then have a custom mandrel bent 2.5" pipe from the cat back...(shh...new cats soon too...hehe, gonna have an "accident with a rock" in order to get high flow cats.)

Wife made me downgrade...

I have an appointment Tuesday with a local muffler shop to have a Dynomax (magnaflow)straight through muffler with 2.25" midpipe, and 12" glasspack on the midpipe near the rear catalytic converter. Cost will be $330 out the door.

The muffler can is larger than the APEX or generic brospeed (not the SOA quiet one), therefore it should be a little quieter. It has a mild diagonal bend in the pipe as it passes through the muffler canister, but it is quite easy to look right through it from one end to the other.

The 12" x 2.25" glasspack should help provide some backpressure for the O2 sensor in the rear cat like it needs. Braden at www.subysport.com thinks this should work great, just wont be as pretty as a SS mandrel bent system for twice as much.

BTW, the even factory exhaust is only a regular aluminized steel muffler (despite SS pipes), and most of these mufflers are good for 7 - 10 years. We got 140K miles on the mufflers on our Merc Villager till two months ago when we replaced them.

I'll let you know how it sounds and performs.

NA: So, you just put on a Universal with no piping? cuz i was thinking 'bout doing that just for the sound? so u still get the boxer sound with just the muffler? what are the differences in performance (prolly none) and sound?
thanks for your help.

Just about any muffler will give you the boxer sound, since you've still got a boxer engine connected to it.

I was waiting for someone to say that.

Larry, you may already be aware of this, but the Dynomax mufflers have been reported to be very loud on this board. One guy warned about this, even with a glasspack.

FWIW, I went with a Borla universal, #40652, 2.25" catback from local muffler shop, stainless resonated tip and stainless high flow resonator (similar to your glasspak I think), for total of around $270 b/f tax. I'm very happy with the results! More power, deep tone, but not too loud or obnoxious. Highway driving does not drone at all.
