Since I am a specialist on detailing , you wash your car once a week. You should not wax every time you wash it. The owner's manual says that you should wax once every 3 months. I usually wax once a month, after stripping the old wax with Maguiar's paint cleaner (green bottle). That takes care of possible dirt that has gotten in between the wax and the clear coat. Then I wax it once. Leave it for 15-20 min for the wax to harden, and wipe it off with a cotton cloth. Then I wax it again (yes, 2 times) and repeat the steps above. My car looks better than showroom...

Lets see. I wash my car once a week just to keep it looking good. I do the outside, inside, and sometimes the engine. What can I say, I love this car. As far as waxing it, I do mine about everyone 3 months or so.

come on guys these aren't show cars they are rally cars built for offroad,i see them as more of a tool than anything else.i say wash your car when it is dirty, constantly buffing these cars, that just makes me mad because you obviously have lost the idea that these cars were built for.

I try and wash my car once a week normally. If I stay on pavement then I sometimes go a month (rare).

If I don't wash it off the clay and grit eats away at the paint and cakes in around the differentials, axles, and suspension. I already have a few spots on my hood where stuff has stuck and eaten away the paint in little tiny patterns. Wax helps this quite problem quite a bit. I just tried zymol today, and it left a very nice shine but was hard to get completely off (left residue). I think I didn't let it sit long enough.

Bottom line... I wash my car when dirty. And my car gets dirty very often.

Do a lot of rallying do you?

I wash at least once a week, and occasional spray-off's every couple of nights depending on how bad it is.

BTW, IBTL, this should be in the dress-up and style forum I believe. *shrug* They have a couple of these style post going on right now I think.

Thumbs up

wash once a week
clay, polish, and wax every 6 months during the winter months (I use Klass acrylic sealant which lasts MUCH longer than carnauba based wax)

for the summer months I usually polish and wax as often as once every two months..I also keep quik detalier ready especially during the summer months..bugs and bird poop are the greatest enemies of my car paint...

IMHO .. if you don;t wash ur car frequently the dirt and other destructive elements will be etched in the paint..over time it will be harder to remove and will deteriorate (sp) ur paint shine...

finksta, who are you to tell someone what they can and cant use their car for? also who are you to tell them how often to wash/wax their car as well as what condition to keep it in.

In fact, my car is a major head turner. I love keeping it shiny and in great condition. Rally X is NOT my thing, but i respect it and think our car could be GREAT for it. I just personally prefer auto X.

I wash once a week, if I can. Wax about once a month.

How many dirty race cars do you see? The first thing that happens after a race or stage is to get components cleaned and inspected. Granted tearing the suspension off a car and replacing it will take priority over cleaning things during a rally, but if there is time, it will be cleaned. What does your toolbox look like? Do you take the time to clean your tools and sort them or do you dump them into a 5-gallon bucket?

Dirt is bad, clean is good. Keeping the exterior clean is better for the finish in the long run, and will certainly pay for itself when you go to sell it. Keeping components clean is better for them, less chance for dirt to work its way into joints or suspension components. And for those of us in the land of salt, making sure that it is off the car is really important to things like exhausts and mufflers.

Yes it's fun getting dirty, that's what cars, jeeps, dirtbikes are for but if you don't take care of them in the long run you'll be worse off.

Wow, you guys must have alot more free time than me. I'm lucky if I have time to wash my car more than once every couple months. Sometimes I'll take it to the Brown Bear wash, just to get rid of road-dust. At most I'll wax it maybe twice a year. It just takes too long, and the weather rarely stays nice long enough in the Seattle area. Anyway, after a year, the Outback still looks great. Unfortunately, we only have covered parking for one car, so I might have to start washing the RS more often.

I just spent most of Saturday giving my RS a complete once over. Throughout the winter months I hosed the car off at least every week. But now that Spring is in the air, I washed it thoroughly, and then did the whole Meguire's three step (cleaner, polish, wax). The car looks far better then when I purchased it one year ago, and the finish feels much smoother then ever.
Either you value your investment or you don't. I would rather spend a whole day every month or so completely taking care of the paint, then look to sell the car someday with pitted, faded, and oxidized paint. The stuff is fragile enough as is - I'm doing my best to preserve it.

I can't even remember when I last washed my car. I know it was prior to September 1999. I've never waxed it. A good downpour every month or so washes the dirt off. The car's 5 years 1 month old and the paint still looks good.
