2.2 L sedan Turbo?
Is it possible to take a turbo assembly off a Legacy '91-94' (Rebuilt) and somehow attach it to my '97 2.2 L sedan? Teagues auto parts has the turbo but can it be done? Would the cylinder heads handle the pressure? can the heat be comprible? please advise?

From what I understand, it is definately possible and very doable. The 2.2 will handle the forced induction. However, with the money you will be spending, you may want to think about swapping the engine in from the turbo and re-plumbing for the addition of an intercooler. Just my 0.02.

Yeah it could be done, but it's whether or not you think it's worth the hassle. B/C you'll have to rip apart the engine etc... why don't you consider doing a NA engine and increase the C/R?

I would check the HP gain before doing it. I think stock older 2.2L turbos were only putting out about 165hp. Might want to purchase a newer setup rather than swap out the '91 - '94.

165hp is beter than 136 and I get more torque? Also how much of the engine could I leave stock? I really don't have the money to port and pollish the heads and strengthin should I wait and save up for that too? Can I use a stromug 57mm midpipe is that adequate?

The horsepower figure is 160hp but more importantly 181ft/lbs of tourque AND keep in mind that the 160hp figure is on a low compression turbo motor. If you put the set-up on you NA 2.2, you will make quite a bit more then 160hp providing everything is done right.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to post last night when I saw this but yes you can use those parts. I am considering using similar parts on mine as far as strictly turbo parts here is what you will need:
*Legacy Turbo/WRX Front Crossmember *Legacy Turbo/WRX Front swaybar *Legacy Turbo/WRX stock or aftermarket Exhaust manifold *Legacy Turbo/WRX Thermostat Housing (too keep the hosing from touching the manifold) *Legacy Turbo/WRX or aftermarket downpipe and exhaust (aftermarket preferred in at least 2.5" diameter) *Intercooler (if you want to run more than 5 psi) you can use from what I heard the 97 WRX since it is smaller than recent years but having an aftermarket Spearco core made up will work better or even try a water to air IC since we don't have hood scoops. *Some custom intake plumbing to the turbo and from it to the IC. *Legacy Turbo/WRX IHI turbo's or even aftermarket replacement you can find slightly used WRX ones on MRT classifieds for @$250 US. *[edit] the oil lines and if you want the cooling lines and probably a few other various hoses. *A blow off valve to keep the turbo from back-pedaling when the throttle plate closes. *For electronics/tuning I suggest at least a J&S safeguard and an Apex'i SAFC for up to 5 psi after that a 3:1 boost dependent fuel pressure riser may be needed along with possibly a fuel pump for increased fuel flow. Other ideas are an entire EMS like the Hal-Tech or Tec-2, Wolf3d, Mo-Tech etc. I believe I covered everything for it if not feel free to add Alex since we are on the level along with Tim and Skidazzle. Rich P.S. This will also make it easier to transplant the new EJ20 in the turbo they promised us into our cars. [This message has been edited by MPREZYA (edited August 09, 2000).] |
