Default going onto highway

I bought a 2001 Impreza Outback Sport with 19,000 miles on it about 2 months ago. I'm not a serious car guy, so this may seem a little silly. When I accelarate from stop to highway speed, not super fast accelaration. The car seems to not respond at first, then after a couple of seconds it takes off. There is a little delay, but this does not happen under normal accelaration, only getting on a highway. Besides that I love the car, alot better in the snow, and MPG than my chevy pickup.

I see no one replied, so I did a search on MSN Autos to find out about your car. Apparently, no turbo on your model (unless someone's modified it) which was my first thought. I guess that eliminates turbo lag. It sounds like the car is running a little rich (too much fuel introduced for combustion) and it is taking a while for the engine speed to increase to 'catch up' to the amount of fuel being introduced. This could explain the fact that it happens on quick acceleration but not normal acceleration. It seems a little early for you to need new plugs, but with relatively low mileage, maybe your car has had long spells where it sat or got driven very little. I'd pull the plugs and see what they look like. It won't cost you anything and you may find your problem. Anyone else got an idea?

Dont all Subaru's Run a tad Rich from the Factory? What size is the 2001 Impreza outback Sort? 2.5L I'm pretty sure..

My Forester which has a 2.5L takes off good from a start, but when it goes from 2nd to 3rd.. It's hard to discribe.. but the feeling reminds me of trying to run in water..

not sure how much you know about cars.. seems like you know a good bit of it, try reseting the ECU.. unplug the Negative terminal from the battery and let it set for 30 Min unplugged. After that plug it back in and start the car.. The car may not start on the first try due to the settings lost in the Ecu, When the car is started let it run until it reaches normal temp... Don't touch the gas at all! once that is done, Turn off the car and start it up again and go for a drive.. From now on it will be in the learning mode and pick up on driving Habits.

01 Outback sports are not 2.5l, they're 2.2l.

Where did you get that story about the ECU? Why would the car not start because battery was disconnected? "Setting lost in the Ecu"?

Can you provide a link for this learning procedure? Sounds like something someone made up.

Sounds like bad advice to me.

A reset ECU (or reset CE light via OBD port) will not start the car on the first turn of the key. It will start then immediately die, never catching. Turn the key to start again and it will start.

The "learning" proceedure is also true, as far as it goes. When you reset the ECU, you return it to default maps and fuel settings, not the ones it had modified over time to correct minor rich/lean settings depending on engine condition and modification.

Has nothing to do with the OP's problem. You won't get "super fast acceleration" from the 2.2L OBS. The "Sport" in OBS isn't short for sport-car. There's simply less torque in the low range of the 2.2L motor.

Sorry, never seen this behavior in either of my WRX's, nor our old ej25 Legacy or ej22 OBS. Reseting the ecu or clearing a CEL via OBDC2.com software never caused this. You can even reset CEL's with the car running.

AFAIK, there is also nothing true about leaving the car idling for an extended period before it's ready to learn. The ECU loses it's learnt info when it's been off battery for a period (ten minutes or more), and will resume learning once the casr is restarted.

Agree this has nothing to do with the OP's issue.

But it's always done that on my car. Disconnect the battery and you always have to turn it twice to start.
