Question O2 internals?

While reading/planning/buying for turbo over the last year, I've read a lot here about the engine internals on the '02 being less suited for FI. I'm curious to know what my engine really has inside, since it's an '02 model (bugeye), but built in Oct 01. I saw a quote from HamFist once that the piston change was around May 2002.
Does anyone know if an internals change always coincides exactly with the model change, or would it be normal for an OEM to change the engine internals part way through a model? Also are there any external features that can identfify engine editions?
Extra complication : Australian releases may be different again?....
