Talking Hello!--Subaru vs Volkswagen?

Hello everyone,

Just thought I would post a hello to all.
Next year it will be time for my first new car. I have owned several used cars since I was 16 (only 25 now but it is amazing how many different cars one can own in 9 years!) now the chance for a new one so I really want something special.
I have been reading along for a while to get a feel for the Impreza i.e quality problems etc., and to see how well the car responds to mild tuning improvements.
I have also been following a VW forum as I am interested in them as well (Jetta,Passat).

The Difference?...

There seem to be alot of quality (design) problems with VWs compared to Subarus. The most common complaints are: Very thin paint, tranny grinding in 2nd as well as vibration at speed, unreliable power window regulators, various electrical gremlins and the tendency for some anti-rust stuff to "ooze" out of the doors on warm days! On top of all this the service at the dealerships is ranked very poor by many owners who have had to literaly scream to get things fixed under warranty (I saw it-my friend has a '00 Passat).

I realize that no car will be perfect but it sounds like the Subaru is good enough to overlook some minor flaws (paint, tires, soft suspension). The other problem deals with the attitude of some of the VW drivers. They especially don't like Japanese cars with the usual attitude being "VW rules- everything else is an overpriced Yugo"-VWs aren't exactly cheap and they are not really true performance cars anyway (FWD!!). Sure they are now offering AWD but as an option ($1500) and only on the Passat for now (Passat AWD =$30k+!).

I am waiting to find out more about the new model but IMHO the current RS is a sweet car and I would be happy with that!
Thanks Again and I hope to see you guys soon. BTW I live in the south bay.

I too had to decide between a VW Jetta VR6 or T1.8 (you can pump up hp with a chip on this one), or the Impreza RS. The Jetta seems more luxurious, but the RS is alot more fun to drive. I've tested both in fast right hand turns. On the RS, no skid sound. Also, the RS is a little cheaper in stock form.

As far as problems...I have heard from friends that the VW has its share of problems, even though one of my closes friends drives one.

The salesman and dealership of course will vary, so I won't be biased there.

If you are looking for individuality...go for the RS...you'll get more looks. The RS looks a little better, especially the front. The RS comes w/ bucket seats which will hold you in sharp turns. If you want a little luxury or want to scare off your vegetarian girlfriend, you can now get the RS with leather seats, about $1280 more.

Drawbacks of the RS...the paint is probably not any better than the VW.

I'm glad I got the RS.

My GF just bought a Passat 4Motion with everything, including leather and sunroof. It is a little pricey at ~$30K, but it's ~$5k cheaper than a similarly equipped A4. Keep in mind, the 4Motion Passat is basically an Audi A4 in disguise. The entire drivetrain is identical as is most of the chassis. The main difference being that the Passat is a little larger overall. We decided on the Passat because of the price and the increased interior space (i.e. room for kids in the future) as well as the Automatic {tiptronic 5spd Auto MMMMM }. The only real downside is that the suspension is much softer than the A4 and it's lacking a bit in the looks dept IMO.

My impressions....
The initial build quality is excellent. Everything is very tight and of good quality. The Passat door closes with a sure sounding thud as opposed to my RS which rattles and never sounds like it actually closed. It's also very quiet and very comftorable.

I've noticed that the VW's built in Mexico tend to have problems more than those built in Germany or elsewhere. I know they had quality issues at the Mexico plant in the past. Most of the problems I've seen on VW's has been with the ancilliary components. Things such as the steroes, electronic window controls, trunk release, etc...

The reason I chose the RS over a VR6 Jetta or something to that effect was the uniqueness and what I felt is more bang for the buck. Oh yeah, and the AWD is much more fun. As far as build quality, I'd say they're about even, the RS has it's share of problems as well. There are many of us blowing up trannies as well as paint problems.

Yeah, that's about right.

You probably have driven enough cars to know what I mean when I say: VW = wannabe BMW; Impreza = wannabe Supra (or something).

FWIW, the VW seats are better than the Subaru's (thicker, better lumbar support). The Impreza has reliability where it counts (drivetrain mechanicals) but an otherwise cheap interior. The Impreza is much, much easier to work on (possibly the easiest current production car out there). The Jetta is quieter and has superior ride quality. The Jetta's stock audio system sounds richer. The Impreza is smaller, lighter, nimbler. The VW is "female", the Impreza is "male" (unless you believe the stuff they say about gays and Subarus, hehe).

Duzzat sound accurate?

Thanks everyone!

I am curious about your thoughts on the Impreza because $20k+ is alot of $$$ to spend and I want to make sure I don't get stuck with a lemon. I am not a speed freak but the thought of squealing my FRONT tires doesn't do much for me
As I gather the Subaru is not without its problems. Why can't they do a good paint job? VW's paint sucks (my buddy already has some swirl marks on his car and he is a FANATIC!). At least there is no doubt about the Subaru's reliability. Next up is a test drive...

Final Question (not sure if its worth another topic): Because of the low popularity is it possible to get a good deal on a Subaru? (a few $k less?)
